How to Survive a Michigan Winter (From Someone Who is Allergic to the Cold)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Michigan winters can be brutal—negative temperatures, icy roads, blistering winds… but there are ways to protect yourself (and your skin) from the effects. I should know, because as a toddler I was told that I had an allergy to the cold temperatures (basically my skin would break out in a rash if it was exposed).

1. Do NOT Be Too Cool to Bundle Up

We’re talking breaking out (or investing in) the thick winter gloves, thermal pants for under your jeans, scarves, face masks, hat and hood, and of course a sturdy pair of boots. Don’t be afraid to wear a couple layers of socks for added warmth if you plan on being outside for any lengthy period of time (more than 15 minutes).

2. Avoid Dry Skin

To keep your skin from literally cracking, make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day (as I’m sure you already know), moisturize every chance you get, and for added protection rub petroleum jelly on your cheeks and hands before bundling up.

3. Be Prepared for Emergencies

In case you get snowed in, keep your home stocked with non-perishables like cans of soup and assorted pastas. Make sure you have a flashlight and batteries in case of a power outage, and make sure you have bottled water on hand. When traveling, make sure your vehicle is stocked with blankets, flashlights, snacks, water, and any other medications or items you need in case something happens.

4. Take Time to Enjoy the Wonders of Winter

Watch the snow sparkle when the sunlight hits it just right, have a snowball fight with some friends, catch snowflakes on your tongue, build a snowman, go ice skating at Yost, and finish with a cup of peppermint hot chocolate or tea to warm you up from the inside out. Remember to let yourself be a kid again, enjoying the things you used to love about winter (if you grew up in a snowy climate) or will soon love about winter (if you’re new to the scene).
