How to Survive Dorm Life as a Health Nut

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

For any incoming freshman, dorm life can seem daunting. This is especially true for health nuts like me who lay awake late at night wondering things like, “Will my mini fridge fit a year’s worth of hummus? Where am I going to buy kombucha? Is there a 24-hour salad bar?”

So, if you’re having a mild to severe anxiety attack about seemingly-miniscule details, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. The good news is, there are plenty of solutions to your worries —you just have to get a little creative. To solve all of your food frets, I’ve put together a list of things that helped me get through an entire year of living in (basically) a shoebox. (Forewarning: I’m a vegan, so these ideas are going to reflect my personal diet. Your nutrition is obviously up to you, but these are just a few things that worked well for me)

1. Whole-grain pita & peanut butterThese were a true god-send for me. When you get back from a late night out (of studying, what else?) you’re naturally going to be starving, and your friends are naturally going to suggest grabbing a burger or pizza. Instead of shoving your face with greasy carbs, opt for a pita with peanut butter warmed up in the microwave. I swear, they’ll change your life.

2. Protein shakes. Especially for those of you who work out, protein shakes are a dorm must-have. Plus, all you need to add is water! They’re easy to make and you can take them on-the-go. Just make sure you find a wholesome brand that doesn’t use too much sugar or preservatives. I buy the vegan brand Herbal Zen Nutrition.

3.Oatmeal. This food is a great source of fiber, so it will keep you full when you have a long night of studying ahead. Like protein shakes, all it requires is water and a microwave! I add cinnamon, raisins, and raw cocoa powder for taste.

4. Hummus. My life wouldn’t be complete without hummus—I use it for absolutely everything. For those of you who are bringing a fridge to college, stock up on this nutritious dip! You can get it pretty much anywhere; I get it from the local Walgreens. Then, I bring plastic bags to my dining hall and stock up on carrots, celery, peppers and other veggies to dip in it.

5. Granola. When I’m studying, I almost always have a bag of granola beside me. Granola is great for keeping your energy levels up when you’re cramming for an exam or just going about your normal day. Try to find a brand that uses organic ingredients and doesn’t load up with sugar.

6. What You SHOULDN’T have. Lastly, I want to stress the importance of NOT keeping junk food in your dorm. This includes processed foods like chips, high-sugar granola bars, candy and sugary coffee or energy drinks. If it’s there, you’re going to eat it…so just don’t buy it. Only buy food that will fuel your mind and body, because you are what you eat!
