The Best of the Best~ Top 3 Super Bowl Commercials

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

It’s no secret that every year millions of people tune into the Super Bowl. Whether you’re a die-hard fan, football fanatic, or a confused member of the bandwagon, there is always something entertaining to watch. Personally, I couldn’t care less about the game, but I sure do love watching those commercials! Each football season, companies spend millions of dollars to get their advertisement onto your TV screen during the game. This year, I think it is safe to say they fell short of their usual humor and creativity. It felt like big companies just paid a bunch of name-brand actors to advertise their products and although I wasn’t the biggest fan of this, there were some definite gems in that pile:

1) Bumble Commercial

Bumble, the popular phone application with slogan “make the first move,” is unlike any of its competitors, be Tinder or Hinge…    It’s THE app that allows only women to initiate conversations with whomever they are attracted to. Therefore, it’s the women’s decision to “make the first move.” In the actual commercial, not only was today’s Serena Williams featured playing tennis, but we also saw flashbacks of younger version of the sports-star watching others around her play the game. While this is occurring, present-day Serena is encouraging all women to not wait for good things come to them, but rather to go out and get them. As this message is playing, the younger version gets up and steps onto the court without anyone telling her to do so. She makes the first move. In light of this empowering message and creativity, Bumble’s commercial secures the title of being The Best Super Bowl Commercial of 2019. Because let’s be honest, we all got chills when we watched it.

2) Budlight’s Corn Syrup Commercial

Cya Coors Light

Usually, I am not a huge fan of the beer commercials. There are always so many Ads promoting different beers that none really stand out. But, this year, Budlight had a hilarious commercial that promoted its beer AND made fun of two of their biggest competitors- Miller Lite and Coors Light. I not only found this commercial hilarious for its direct criticism of other beers, but also due to its clear “Game of Thrones” reference, wherein the “king of Budlight” travelled to the “other kingdoms” to deliver a barrel of corn syrup (which, remember, Budlight does not use!!). So cheers to Budlight for combining humor and a well-known show to advertise itself. Gold star from me, or should I just give them the throne?

3) Dorito’s Commercial

Every year, the Dorito’s commercial is highly anticipated. The company usually uses a funny advertisement to promote its product, but this year, they took a different route. The ad used famous artists, Chance the Rapper and the Backstreet Boys, to promote its new flavor of chips. We have Chance rapping about the new flavor, and breaking out into a spontaneous dance party (!!) with the Backstreet Boys as they sing their infamous song, “Tell me Why.” Although I’m disappointed it wasn’t as funny as previous Dorito Ads, Chance delivered a great rap and killer dance moves, which is why it has earned this year’s third place.

Overall, both the game and the ads were slightly disappointing, but thankfully these three ads (& shirtless Adam Levine) made up for it. Let’s hope for better luck next year.

p.s. Please never forget Dorito’s best commercial to-date: “Keep your hands off my mama, and Keep your hands off my Doritos
