Here at U of M, there are currently 1,271 student organizations. Some are community-based organizations, others academic-based; however, there is one student organization that stands apart from all of the rest: Operation Beautiful. Not only is the organization inspiring in itself, but its founder on the U of M campus, Amanda Schweigert is one of the most empowered female students on our campus.
Amanda is a junior from Whitehall, Michigan, and is majoring in Brain Behavior & Cognitive Science with a minor in Gender and Health.
What is Operation Beautiful?
Operation Beautiful is an organization dedicated to promoting positive thinking about oneself through random acts of kindness and inspirational messages. The organization was started by Caitlin Boyle and began using Post-It notes with the phrase “You are beautiful” posted in random places.
What motivated you to start Op. Beautiful, here at UofM?
When I saw this organization, I was really inspired by it and thought that the University of Michigan campus would be a great target to brighten people’s days through uplifting notes. The idea was met with more enthusiasm than I had ever hoped, and took off immediately. We are still a new organization, but our ideas for the future are truly inspiring and joyful!
What place on campus is your favorite place to post your post-its?
I love putting post-its in the libraries because as cliche as that might be, tons of people see them there. And let’s be honest, the library doesn’t always evoke the best moods in all of us.
Â
How many people are currently active with Operation Beautiful?
There are currently around 70, and we hope to start off next school year with a bang!
Â
Are you involved in any other organizations on campus?
I get really passionate about a lot of things and am therefore involved in 24 campus organizations (a cutback from last year!) A couple favorites are Alpha Delta Pi, March of Dimes, PULSE, Greek InterVarsity, MESO, and New Life Church.
Â
How do you balance time between your major, organizations, and your sorority?
That is tricky because I enjoy doing things involving ADPi and other organizations a lot more than school most times. I like being busy with all this stuff, because I LOVE all of it! I usually set aside library time during the day, have multiple meetings on most evenings, and am usually kicked out of the Ugli at close 3 or 4 nights a week.Â
Â
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
Haha, GREAT question. Hopefully working in a hospital with babies and young, underprivileged mothers creating programs to help them overcome postpartum depression and many other obstacles. And married and living on the beach!
Â
Obviously motivated is one of your key-personality traits. Do you have any quirky habits or is there something that people don’t generally know about you that you would like to share?
Well my secret dream is to star in a Broadway musical, and my two favorite magazines are Cosmo and The Journal of Neuroscience. I’m also obsessed with baseball, basketball, every water sport, and scuba diving.Â
