Alisha Luthra: Relay for Life Mentor

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mich chapter.

Hometown: McLean, Virginia

Favorite Place to Eat in Ann Arbor: Frita Batidos

Fun Fact: I have a black belt

Her Campus: What activities are you involved in on campus?

Alisha Luthra: I’m a recruitment specialist and a mentor for Relay for Life, a member of Michigan Business Women “We Read,” and a part of the Michigan Economics Society. I’m also super involved with the Indian Student Association, and I was a choreographer for the largest student run show in the nation. I’m also the assistant philanthropy chair for Gamma Phi Beta and the co-captain of their Relay for Life team. I also dance for the Michigan Bhangra Team and help run their social media.

HC: What made you get involved with Bhangra?

AL: Bhangra is a traditional cultural dance from the Punjab region of India, which is where I’m from. I love to dance, and I wanted to learn more about my culture, so I thought this was a great way to fuse the two.

HC: Currently, you’re in the top five participants for MRelay and have raised over $6,000. Can you tell me more about your involvement with MRelay?

AL: I’m a part of the events planning committee, but more specifically, my role is the recruitment specialist and mentor. At the beginning of the year, it was my job to recruit as many teams as possible for the event. I went around speaking to different chapters and clubs, and I also cold called people to talk about what MRelay does. Once the teams are registered, as a mentor, I act as an advisor to support and encourage the organizations I oversee. My main objective is to spread awareness for the American Cancer Society.

HC: Where do you see yourself in ten years?

AL: In ten years, I hope to have my life together with an established career and a family. I want to do CSR work, which is Corporate Social Responsibility. Every major corporation has a CSR initiative that manages their philanthropic endeavors. In ten years I hope to be at a place to pursue this passion.
