Calling all fellow Ozians! Whether you have seen Wicked: For Good or not, here is your guide to make the most magical evening with friends and watching (or rewatching if you are obsessed like I am) Wicked, pulled together in a clock tick.
Step 1: Decorate Your Space
- This kind of party ideally works in a living room but you can choose the space you want to host. Then you’re going to completely cover the space with anything and everything green and pink. I’m talking balloons, streamers, ribbons, tableware, etc. If you want to lean more Glinda vibes, pink and white is your color scheme for decorations and for the bubbles, I just discovered bubble garland which you can buy online. If you’re team Elphaba, cover your space in green and black instead.
- Set out some witch hats, cauldrons, crowns, and wands for some decor or even as props for pictures! Making a “Yellow Brick Road” lead from your door to your hosting space and/or a photo area would be fun too.
Step 2: Food and Drinks
- Themed drinks: A green juice or matcha if you or one of your guests is a fan, for Elphaba, and something pink but of course bubbly, for Glinda. Bonus points if you can find the exact or similar mini green bottles of the “Elixir” the Wizard is constantly seen with.
- Snacks: If you’re a creative soul, I have seen many people recreate the Wicked poster of Elphaba and Glinda on a charcuterie board, which is pretty cool and I admire the dedication. Green and pink cupcakes, cookies, and cake pops are fun and cute desserts. And your menu is now the perfect balance of salty and sweet and also easy-to-eat finger food to enjoy throughout the movie.
Step 3: Activities
- Have everyone dress on theme as their favorite characters!! Whether as our main characters, Elphaba and Glinda or Madame Morrible, The Wizard, Fiyero, or if you want to go full Wicked and The Wizard of Oz experience, have people come as Dorothy, Tin-Man, the Cowardly Lion, etc. But if you prefer to keep your dress code lowkey, do not worry, dressing in simple pink, black, or green works too or if you can find Wicked pajamas to make it a slumber party vibe.
- Some activities could include a trivia game on the original play or the movies and having prizes make the game more fun (and competitive). If you have theatre and choir kids in your crowd, a karaoke component is a must have and bonus points to anyone who can nail Cynthia Erivo’s end riff in “Defying Gravity.”
Step 4: Distractions and Debriefs
- We’re going to treat this experience like the actual movie theater, turning off our devices and putting them away, unless of course an emergency arises. Lights are turned off and so are our phones to really enjoy the movie.
- If you had just seen Wicked: For Good then rewatched Wicked, a debrief is a must! Talk about the movies in comparison, what surprised you, favorite moments, and hated moments.
If you are obssesulated with Wicked as much as I am, throw you and your friends or family this party and treat it as your own version of the Ozdust. Happy partying, Ozians!
