As the weather becomes chillier by the day, you begin to wonder when the first snowfall will arrive. With that, it’s time to put away the last of those shorts and tanks you have been hanging on to and wearing without layering in the bitter cold. Swap those scraps of summer for a complete winter wardrobe. Finding a way to dress stylishly while keeping warm has been challenging because, personally, I have always felt that I need to sacrifice one for the other. Below are a few winter essentials that have helped me: they are perfect additions to outfits, pair well with most things, and most importantly, keep me warm.

Jackets

The Women’s Heavenly™ Long Hooded Jacket by Columbia is perfect for freezing winter conditions. It comes in a range of dark tones, versatile to complement any color palette. What makes this jacket ideal for winter is its water resistance, which prevents snow from soaking into and dampening the coat. Additionally, the jacket has breathable, insulating interior lining, which keeps you warm in the harsh cold without weighing you down. This coat was my go-to, as its spacious pockets held my phone and wallet securely when I did not want to carry my handbag out in frosty temperatures. The long cut design makes the jacket both stylish and flattering for all figures.

There are some puffer jackets that feel too heavy and confining, but the American Eagle Lightweight Puffer Jacket is far from that. As the name suggests, the coat is lightweight, despite its bulky appearance, and allows for comfortable movement. The jacket is not ideal for snowy weather because it does not repel water well, but it is good for keeping you warm on chilly days. Due to its versatile design, you can wear it with almost anything. It’s a stylish topper for all your layers, and the puffed look is perfect for adding volume to your outfits.

Base Layers

Columbia’s Omni-Heat Touch™ Liner Gloves provide that extra bit of warmth for your hands when you need it most. Their thin internal thermal lining makes them breathable and cozy. These are a great choice if you want to keep both your fingers mobile and hands warm in frigid weather. Layer these gloves under bulkier gloves to waterproof them and to allow you to handle snow.

32 Degrees Heat’s Lightweight Baselayer Legging acts as the ideal pair of thermal pants. These are breathable and effectively retain body heat. Their stretchy and seamless fabric ensures they are flexible, and perfect to start layering on top of.

BOOTS

The UGG Women’s Classic Mini II is cozy and easy to slip into. However, to keep them nice and cozy, do not wear them in the snow because water easily absorbs into the boot’s soft suede outer layer. On the other hand, their interior sheep skin lining keeps your feet warm during bitter winter weather. You can choose from a variety of neutral and muted colors — tones that make these boots a perfect pair for many outfits. The minis’ low cut allows for more ankle mobility, and makes them go so well with leggings and wide jeans.

The Women’s Minx™ Shorty IV Boot by Columbia is my top pick for wearing in snowy conditions. In contrast to the UGGS noted earlier, these boots grip the ground better, offering better stability in slushy environments. Personally, I am not a fan of bulky winter boots that feel heavy on the feet. These Columbia boots feel breathable and are comfortable to move around in, due to their lightweight insulation that keeps you warm and dry. Available in select neutral and muted colors, these boots’ stylish fur collar, high lace, and non-bulky contour add charm to simple winter outerwear.

Winter outerwear might appear plain and dull at first, but it can be both fashionable and functional. Jackets, winter footwear, and thermals are a few of the many basics you need in order to stay warm in the cold. The pieces listed above are made of quality materials, serve their purpose, and have lasted me quite a few years. They are definitely worthwhile investments for your wardrobe.
