Why You Should Listen to the New “1975” Album

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

The wait is over. The 1975’s second album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, (this may be one of the longest album titles of our generation) was released on February 26th. Their first album, The 1975, is a little dark. From their album cover, to their merch, and their displays at concerts, everything stuck to the black theme. Lead singer Matty Healy is never seen without a bottle of wine on the stage, and sings with very strong emotion.

On June 2nd, The 1975 deactivated all of their social media accounts. This was a little disheartening and discouraging for fans. However, the next day their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts were all back up–this time with a post of a simple pale pink color. This was a strange move, since they have always been all about the back and white, including all of their past Instagram posts.

It seems that with the release of their new album, The 1975 is going for a new look. In a way, from their sound, it seems like they are emerging from a dark depression into a new light. The have released a few songs so far that are much more upbeat compared to their old sound. “UGH, Love Me” and “The Sound” seem funky and fun. Their music video for “Love Me” seems to be poking fun at the rich, famous, and pop music, which they have been compared to.

I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It, seems like a turning point in The 1975’s music. Be sure to check out their new sound!
