Why Women Need to Treat Women Better (Including Yourself!)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

In today’s day and age, it can be easy to make jokes about issues we think are in the past, or are just innocent fun, but sometimes it’s important for us to take a step back and remember to appreciate our modern culture and all we have accomplished for equality. Tons of stereotypes exist today about many different groups of people, and one of those groups is women. So here’s a little reminder, Collegiettes, of why we rock and should all expect to be treated well!

Everyone’s heard the jokes about women – “Go make me a sandwich!“, “Are you PMSing?“, “Just let the man drive.” – and while we may have innocent intentions, we have to be careful not to undersell ourselves or our friends. Women have made great strides in (surprisingly) recent history, so let’s own it

Not only do women undersell ourselves with stereotypical jokes, but we can be way too hard on ourselves. Unrealistic expectations of how women should look can ruin someone’s self-image, mentality, and confidence. We all have different bodies, different personalities, and we all have flaws. Women must always remember that no one is perfect, and you have to appreciate and support yourself as much as you support your friends.

Every woman, not just us, Collegiettes, deserves a reminder of how we are all capable, respectable, and strong people. Let’s spread the word – there’s more to us than nail polish and selfies, and we’ve got some important stuff to say.
