Before I came to school I was terrified that I wasn’t going to make any friends. I loved the friends I had at home and didn’t want to leave them. Flash forward to November of my freshman year…although I still love and miss my hometown friends, I could not be happier with all of the great friends I have made in just three months here.
Class friends are great, sports friends are awesome, but floor friends are what have made my experience here the best so far. They live close to you, they know you so well, and they love you. Here are just a few reasons why they are the best friends you’ll make at UMass:
1. They are just a few doors away when you need a good hug or cry
Feeling down? Homesick? Your floor friends will understand and will always be there with arms wide open when you need a good cuddle. They’re more than willing to let you cry into their shoulders and offer you words of advice. They’ll suggest a trip home or immediately shove a carton of ice cream in your hands to make you feel the best you can!
2. Movie nights are too easy to organize when everyone is so close to each other
Halloween movies, Christmas movies, rom-coms, or even scary movies: your floor friends will be there to watch with you! Gather up all your girls, pick a room with a TV or head to the lounge, and get ready for a fun night in. Ordering wings or making popcorn is the cherry on top to a great night!
3. They’re less than a minute away when you need some help with homework or studying
Although you might all be taking different classes or have different majors, there’s no doubt that one of your floor friends will be able to help you with that math problem or Spanish question you have. They’re great for when you need quick edits on a paper due tomorrow or even when you just want to sit in a room and do homework with someone else for company. You can put on a chill Spotify playlist and get some work done while also being surrounded by your besties!
4. You always have people to go out with
Whether you’re ready to go see what kind of fun a Friday night can offer or you just want to take a trip to the mall, your floor friends will always be ready to go with you! They never want you to go alone and they always know how to make sure you have the most fun possible. Some of the best memories can be made dancing along to music in one of your friend’s rooms before heading out on the weekend, trust me.
5. They give the best advice
Your floor friends know you. You live close to them, they’ve seen you with no makeup on, in your pajamas, and at 3 o’clock in the morning. You’ve shared secrets, told stories, and whenever you have an issue you can count on them to be there for you. They keep it real and they let you know their true feelings and opinions. You can trust them to keep your problems private and to offer you the best advice they can give, followed by a good hug.
6. Clothes sharing, makeup sharing, and more!
Chances are your floor friends have similar taste as you and they are usually more than willing to share their clothes, a cute lipstick shade, and whatever else you might need! Need a good sweater to pair with that dress you want to wear? Knock on any of your friend’s doors and see who has what you’re looking for!
Floor friends truly are the best friends. You get to know them quickly and they will be some of the best people you meet in college. Never be scared to knock on doors and see who you meet! I was terrified at first, but coming out of my shell was one of the greatest things I have done here so far.
