What Happens When You Use Your Partner’s Shampoo and Soap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

There comes a time in every relationship where you’ll have to use your partner’s shower products because you are unable to access your own. Whether you forgot to wash up at your own place, or you both slept in and need a fresh start to the day, it’s inevitable that you’ll one day crack open their foreign-scented mystery soap. When the day comes, here’s what you can expect from this new experience.

1. You’re slightly afraid of the potentially damaging effects this shampoo (or whatever product) may have.

When you bring the bottle up to your nose, you notice it smells very different than the products you usually use. Will my body react strangely to this exotic substance? You hesitantly scope it out as your significant other eyes you strangely and tells you to get over it. But is it really that simple? You think not.

 2. You decide to just try a little bit and see what happens.

You can’t just stand there hesitantly forever, so you make the executive decision to squeeze a dallop of the product into your palm. Very cautiously, as to not anger the Shampoo Gods, you apply a bit to your hair and wait for its effects.

3. Nothing bad happens.

You gingerly wait a few seconds for something to happen, but nothing does. You add a little more just to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, and still the only negative side effect is that you smell differently than you normally do. Is this real life, or is it a trap? You continue cautiously, fully aware that the damage has been done and there’s no turning back now.

4. Because the world hasn’t ended yet, you take a liberal amount and lather it all over, pretending to be your partner.

Hey look, I’m you! This is the soap you use in the morning. Looks like there’s two of you now! You laugh to yourself as your partner questions why they decided to be with someone so crazy (but you swore you saw a smile on their face just a second ago.)

5. You finish your shower and get dressed like a normal person.

Let’s admit it, you look good no matter what hair products you use. And the world will never know the wild experience you endured to achieve this flawless look.

6. You get back home and use your own soap, and it feels magically clean.

Although you love your partner and respect their choice of toiletry products, you will always have a soft spot for your own shampoo.
