Growing up in a family with three older sisters has been one of the most magical experiences that a person can have. Being a part of a sisterhood gave me perspective on all the ways that women overcome the struggles and expectations that are placed upon us in this patriarchal society. I’m writing this as a dedication to all the women in my life who have inspired me to be resilient and to challenge the hierarchies. To my grandmother, who has always taught me to speak up no matter what the consequences are. To my mother, who inspired me to create my identity and not settle for less than the gold standard in any romantic relationship.
Beyond all the ways the women in my life have inspired me, they’ve also made every big moment special. I have this very specific memory of getting ready for the prom with all my female friends. “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull was blaring on one of our speakers. I could hear the spoken words, “Can I use that lip gloss?” My friend was pinning up my hair while wearing one of those green face masks. It was magical. There have been so many magical moments just like that one created by all the women in my life.
There are so many great memories I’ve had that include all the special women in my life, such as getting my nails done with my aunt or going shopping with my best friend, Julia. Even now, at 21 years old, there’s just a special feeling when I’m having a sleepover with all my female friends, and we have every sweet treat you can think of. Everyone sits around the Lays chips bag in the living room with blankets, and we stay up laughing all night long. When I used to share a room with my sister, we would sometimes stay up until two a.m. just talking about life.
When the Barbie movie came out, it hit me so hard since it highlighted all the ways that make woman and girlhood such a unique experience. So to all the women in my life who have given me advice, made me laugh, or had crying sessions with me, thank you.
