Things To Do Around Amherst In The Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Amherst is very much so a college town. However, there are many things to do in this town that involve more than just the bars. Each weekend, everyone rests during the day, but there are many things to do out in Amherst as the weather gets nicer.

The Cows

Now, it is not unknown that Amherst is filled with cows and farms, but there are places where you can pet the cows and feed them. One place, in particular, is called Mill Valley. Here, you can pet cows of all ages, even calves, while at the same time eat some of the best ice cream in town. The views are amazing, and the cows love the company. It is calming to be around animals since most college students aren’t able to have them.

Farmers Markets

Starting at the end of April, there is a weekly farmers market. It is open until November, so even when you come back next semester, it is a nice activity to do. There are various vendors, fresh food, and unique decorations. It is a great way to get involved in the community and support smaller businesses. It is also a great way to meet new people and see what Amherst is really about.

Walking Trails

In my opinion, Amherst has some of the best views. There are various levels of trails. One of the harder ones I have enjoyed is the Blue Hills reservation trail. This trail is almost straight up and requires climbing over rocks, but the view is amazing. There is something very soothing about hiking and getting in cardio while engrossed in nature. However, if you are interested in a good view with less work, Mount Sugarloaf is a great option. Mount Sugarloaf is located right outside of Amherst in Sunderland. Here, you have the option to drive to the top and look at the view. If you do plan on driving, though, make sure you are not afraid of cliffs and narrow roads. This dirt road can barely fit two cars as it winds up the mountain to the top.

Puffer’s Pond

As the weather gets warmer, more and more people want to go outside. Being in the center of Massachusetts makes going to a beach not an option. However, Puffer’s Pond has been found as Amherst’s own little body of water. It is a great place to go with a group of friends and just relax all day. The views are amazing, and there is greenery and wildlife everywhere. Puffer’s Pond is conservation land, so it is important to make sure that any trash is taken home in order to preserve the wildlife.

As college students, we struggle to get ourselves out of the house on weekends, but I think that is the best time to go explore and decompress. Getting to know Amherst and what it has to offer allows you to not only hang with friends but also learn something new about this town we all live in.
