The Resurgence of the Tumblr Girl

As the turn of the New Year approached, a certain trend immediately took over social media platforms like a storm: “2026 is the new 2016.” This trend involved a resurgence in fashion, music, media, memes, as well as various forms of nostalgia that paid homage to the year 2016, especially to what people have been often referring to as the “Tumblr Girl”. Much in connection to Gen Z, the study of this trend posed an important question: what was the connection between a year with a generation that we spent most of our time growing up in and that we would not remember?

where did this all start

A variety of these trends started with polka dots, seal foam teal Pricilla sweatpants, and beyond the domain of fashion there were resurgence of trends such as recreating King Kylie graduation photos the mannequin challenge. This area touched most the generation that spent their time growing up, no where near being involved in the trend that shaped what 2016 look like. What could possibly be building this connection to being a Tumblr Girl?

The evidence is actually right in front of us. In 2016 we did not have to worry about exams, complex friendships, finding jobs, and keeping up with good grades. When a new year comes around it adds to the many we have lived before. Getting older you looked back and never have the time to noticed just exactly how far we have come. The generation feeling the most touched by this trend are now starting, or going well into their adulthood in this year of 2026. To be able to understand exactly why Gen Z feels so connected to 2016, it is to know exactly what this “aesthetic” entails.

The people obviously yearn for nostalgia, this is exactly the chance this trend has given Gen Z: to take hold of an era that had shaped their childhood but well as to live in a future that they constantly define. Though it was sad to see the imminent death to indie sleeve (you will always live in my heart), the question is whether or not this shall be an aesthetic that Gen Z will stay true to, or will something else come in its way very soon.

What is the Tumblr girl Aesthetic?

Much of what defines 2016 comes from the social media blog platform known formally as Tumblr. Founded in 2007 by David Karp and Marco Arment, their purpose was to build a social media platform which allowed its user to post freely without having to demand a writing style too heavy like blogs typically seen on WordPress and TypePad, but not too freefrom as Facebook. The more tredier that Tumblr got it became a home for various ffanbaseing building over a million hashtags and the starting point to many aesthetics in which we seen evolve to the one we follow today. One aesthetic that stays true to its design is mostly known as the “Tumblr Girl Aesthetic”.

Rather than being a clothing trend that often comes and goes this aesthetic was focused on the music of the time, moody feminist notes, as well as teen angst. Kylie Jenner pink and blue hair is often used now as a prime example as to what this aesthetic truly stands for, that is simply just the tip of the iceberg.

Kyle iconic hair did stand to be influential as to what people considered a definding factor through the inspiration from alterantive fastion and “out of the box thinking” was what made this trend stand out the most. as much as people loved the baggy flanned button up with skinny ripped jeasn you coudl see other prime examples in brimmed basketball hats, superman baby tees with black square glasses, and – my personal favorite- a messy bun. The pivial aspect to this atestic stoof in how there was not one box to check off exactly how one could fit to the aestic but in how you presented yourself showing the hazey moods that early users of Tumblr outlinned in their usage of the platform.

So, is tumblr a in?

Not, exactly. As seen Tumblr usage has not had an uptake in quite sometime due to popularity in other social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. But, its aesthetics and trends that people have brought back has made Tumblr a name you cannot miss.

Who knows, maybe 2027 could be the new 2017..maybe not, doesnt have the same ring to it. Let me know youre preditions for 2027 trends!
