Study Abroad Diary: 5 Types of Guys You’ll Meet Studying Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

So you’re walking by the River Thames, or spending a glorious evening by the Taj Mahal, when you suddenly catch the eye of a very handsome (and impeccably dressed) local. Suddenly you realize that the pool of men around you are better looking than you ever imagined them to be. When did the world start looking so beautiful? How come you never noticed that back at your home university? Maybe it’s the foreign water, but studying abroad is starting to look better than you had hoped it would. You’ve thought about the perfect study abroad romance, but how can you tell the phonies from the fantastic locals? Here are 5 types of guys you meet while studying abroad!

1) The “Too Good To Be True” Guy

This guy has everything – looks, smarts, style and the personality to boot! Yet, something about him seems too good to be true. Is it really possible for someone to have all those qualities and that unique “local” vibe that’s a part of a foreign fling? It’s possible, but for the most part, be wary of these types. Chances are, he knows he’s attractive and it’s all part of the act (of course, there’s also the possibility that he’s legit, and in that case, GO FOR HIM). If he’s that good at smooth talking, chances are you’re not the only girl he’s pulled his act on.

2) The Local Hipster

The “Local Hipster” and the “American Hipster” are two different guys. The “Local Hipster” isn’t your regular PBR drinking, vinyl collecting man; he’s attractive in his own scruffy, yet polished way. Whether he’s discussing politics in the EU, or touring a few museums, he’s the guy you want when you need an evening of exploring the place you’re studying abroad in. Chances are, his knowledge of the area’s many “non-touristy” attractions is impressive and it beats sitting on a bus with a fanny pack.

3) Prince Charming

Everything about this guy reads like an old romantic novel. He’s sweet, charming and ever so polite. He’s very well-mannered and actually makes you feel like you’re in a black and white movie (he may even be the kind of guy who believes in good ol’ fashioned chivalry). He’s extremely nice, but probably not the best idea if you’re looking for something short term.

4) The Study Abroad Buddy

When you’re abroad, there may be a few times when you feel homesick. In times like these, it’s great to have someone who knows exactly what you’re going through and can give you the kind of familiarity that you’re looking for. Look no farther than the “Study Abroad Buddy.” He’s from the same country you are, there’s no language barrier, and he understands exactly what you’re going through. Obviously, one may think that it’s silly to be dating the guy who’s in your study abroad program instead of “The Local,” but the benefit of this is that he’s in the same place you are, which means that your relationship isn’t effectively over the second you board a plane back home.

5) The Exchange Predator

Probably not the best guy to meet, but you will definitely meet this type a lot during study abroad. He knows you’re foreign, he knows what you’re looking for, and he’s more than willing to oblige. But he’s probably the last man you ever had on your mind. You’ll find these types lurking around clubs and bars, scoping unsuspecting exchange students. These types will take your naivety in a foreign land for granted, and may initially seem like a good idea with their sexy accents and dapper appearance, but this isn’t smart for both long term and short term options. Stay away, and focus on having some time out with your friends and flat mates instead.

Mingle safely, collegiettes!
