The Struggles of Not Being a Morning Person

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Let’s face it: some of us were just not meant to wake up early. Getting out of your cozy, comfortable bed every morning is so much harder than people think. Your bed is your happy place and why should you leave the thing that makes you the happiest? We’ve all been there and know the feeling because we’re not morning people either.  The daily struggles of being a not being a morning person are totally underrated and here’s why:

Alarm clocks are our worst enemy.  That horrible, beeping, buzzing and ringing that wakes us up every morning is not our friend. How many times is it acceptable for us to press the snooze button? Oh, alarm clocks – we really don’t like you.

Because our beds are so comfortable, we like to stay in bed until the very last minute.  The problem: we don’t leave ourselves enough time to get ready in the morning.  The pants that are on the floor from yesterday?  Yup, they’re still clean.  Have time to brush your hair? Nope, just stick it in a messy bun.  You have perfected the art of getting ready in five minutes in order to take advantage of as much bed time as you can get.

Once you’re finally out of bed, the next step is always coffee, and a large one. You can’t make it through a day without at least two (maybe three) cups.  Without caffeine, there is no possible way you could be able to get through your day.

Because you have to get your coffee every morning, you’re usually running late to class or work.  You’re almost never on time because your bed and coffee are just more important.  There’s no way you’re making it on time to your 9:05 class. Oops. Again.

Speaking of early classes, those are a big no.  Any class before 12:30 just won’t fly. How can someone expect you to be out of bed and functioning before then? Any classes before the afternoon will only result in you nodding off or actually falling asleep.

Walking through campus is hard when you’re too tired to function, especially when you see one of your friends.  They’ve probably been up for a while and are fully awake and you aren’t.  The inability to function in the morning makes it hard to be social and the absolute last thing you want to do is engage in a conversation Talking takes a lot more effort than you think.

When you finally make it back to your room, a nap is necessary.  Without a quick nap, how else would you be able to get through the rest of the day and all the work you have to do?

Waking up from a nap is the best feeling as you finally feel like a normal human being.  You are ready to conquer the rest of the day! Bring it on!

Those mornings can be so hard and thankfully you made it through another day, just in time for you to crawl back into bed again and get comfy.  Finally back in your happy place, you dread the next morning when you have to do this all over again. But for the time being, your bed is the comfiest place on the earth and there’s no way you’re ever leaving.
