The Stages of Catching “The Feels” for Your Hookup

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

1. The second or third time you see him, you both establish that you want a casual non-exclusive thing.

I can do casual.

2. You get to know each other and realize that he’s actually a pretty cool guy.

Wow, he’s actually a well-rounded guy with ambitions!

3. You stalk him on social media to scope out his situation.

Is she just a friend or does he like her? They seem pretty cozy in his Instagram from 118 weeks ago. Maybe I’ll just take a quick look at her Facebook…

4. You start to think about him during the weekdays.

You look nice to classes just in case you see him walking around campus.

5. Pillow talk and cuddling become almost more enjoyable than hooking up.

6. You analyze everything he does.

He kissed me goodbye in the morning! Does this mean he has feelings for me?

7. Your friends host an intervention.

You swear that you don’t like him, but they insist that they don’t want see you get hurt because they are the best friends in the entire world.

8. You’re in denial about your feelings.

No I don’t like him at all. I just think he’s super funny, cute, and love his taste in music and the way he looks into my eyes. But in like a totally unemotional way! No emotions here!

9. You hookup with another guy to get him out of your head.

It doesn’t work. All you can think about is wanting to be with him instead.

10. You finally admit that you like him to your BFF.

11. You start becoming clingy. It’s embarrassing but you just can’t help it.

It’s only downhill from here.

12. He ends things because he doesn’t want it to become messy and emotional.

Emotional? It’s not like I like you or anything! LOL!

13. Slowly but surely, you will get over him.

Lesson learned: Don’t have a casual relationship with a guy that you would actually date.
