Reuniting With My High School Best Friend

Kaylee has been my best friend for the past eight years of my life. We met in high school and graduated together. We were inseparable, but once we graduated, she decided to go to school in Florida. Each time we see each other, it’s as if we haven’t been separated. I haven’t seen her in four months, and won’t see her again for another two. She arrived on Friday and left on Sunday for a casual weekend trip.

It all started with the ride to pick her up. The closest airport is 40 minutes away, so we drove to pick her up. On the way, I picked up a few snacks for her, and my high school friends and I caught up on our past few weeks. I have two friends from high school that also go to UMass Amherst, and since we were all in the same friend group, we all had to welcome her at the airport.

Once we got back to Amherst, we showed her around the town. She has visited previously, but every year, we all move into different houses, so we had to give her all the tours. After we finished showing her around, we decided it was time to eat. We took her to Antonio’s because you can’t visit Amherst without going there. Once we finished eating, it was time to get ready for Halloween. We gossiped and talked the whole time we were getting ready. We had coordinated outfits since we knew she was coming, so Kaylee, our friend Nicole, and I got ready in our UPS outfits and headed to our friend’s place. Kaylee knew many of our college friends as we had hung out with them during the summer, so she fit right in.

The next day was our last tailgate of college. As we roamed around the parking lot saying hi to everyone, it felt like I finally had my best friend by my side, which I needed, since last Halloween had been such a disaster. Once we left the tailgate, we walked back to my house to get ready for the second night. Tonight, the two of us would be pirates. As we gathered everything together, we realized half of our costume was just not going to work — but it was too late now, so we just went with what we had. We headed to my boyfriend’s house to hang out with them before we went out. Kaylee has always been close with my boyfriend, and I think that is a really important thing. If your friends don’t like your boyfriend, they may have a good reason for that.

It was the first time going to Spoke, and we walked there from his house. Apparently, in Florida, they do not walk everywhere. Rather, they constantly get rides, so you can only imagine what she was saying on the walk there. It was freezing to her, and it was a lot of walking that she doesn’t usually do. Once we got to Spoke, we hung out and ended the night hanging out at my boyfriend’s house.

Each time we meet is extremely important to me. I don’t see her very often, and I want to spend as much time with her as I can. Having someone like that can have a big impact on your life. She is someone I can always count on, and I am so lucky to have her. Unfortunately, we had to drive her back Sunday, and just like that, she was gone. I miss her again now, and I can’t wait for the next time we can get together.
