The Return of the Boy Band

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

I never thought I’d see this day again. The nineties are back and with their best asset: boy bands. My eight-year-old heart is bursting at this sudden comeback of such musical genius. The once wholesome image boy bands, performing choreographed step dances donning frosted tips and matching outfits is very much over. Now, a revamped, new sexy boy band trend has recently exploded on the music scene.

Stop reminiscing about the hilarity that was once 90’s boy bands, and start taking notice of the new crop of boys that have emerged and begun to pave the way for boy bands of the future.

If you liked The Backstreet Boys, you’ll love The Wanted

The Wanted is a smoldering group of five boys (well, men – ages range from 18-23 primarily) hailing from the UK. The band is a British/Irish group most recognized for their undeniably catchy hit, “Glad You Came”. When we were growing up, The Backstreet Boys were so great in that there was someone for everyone. Every pre-teen girl within her group of friends had a crush on a different member, and the same seems to hold true for The Wanted. The group is a smorgasbord of beautiful, and there is most definitely someone for everyone (if not all of them…). The fact that they are all foreign, most certainly doesn’t hurt.

Remember Dream Street? Well, Big Time Rush is the new Dream Street

Please tell me I’m not the only one that remembers that baby boy band Dream Street? Jesse McCartney (“Beautiful Soul” anyone?) was the lead singer of this 11-year-old group.  I totally see the Nickelodeon based Big Time Rush as the grown up version. Big Time Rush started as a TV program on Nickelodeon, and any Collegiettes out there that babysit 6-12 year old girls are very familiar, I’m sure. Now though, the fictional band has transitioned to the radio airwaves. Their new single “Music Sounds Better With You” has garnered much listener attention and popularity over the past few months. Their boyish charm is as hard to resist as the song itself.

One Direction is the new Beatles. Wait…did I just write that?

Okay, hear me out. Obviously, nothing will ever touch The Beatles. The level of their success and music is of a completely different caliber. The hype surrounding One Direction however, is reminiscent of the 60’s British group that took America by storm. After appearing on The X Factor, the boys signed a deal with Columbia Records, and their adorable selves (accents included) were introduced to swooning American girls. “What Makes You Beautiful”, an up beat number praising ladies for their natural and unassuming beauty, has become an anthem across the states. With close to 100 million hits on you tube, it’s safe to say that America has fallen in love with the boy band that is One Direction, myself included.
