Ranking ‘SOUR’ Songs From Least Best to Best (Because There Are No Bad Songs On the Album)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

At this point, I think it’s safe to say that Olivia Rodrigo really is the next Taylor Swift. (Sorry, not sorry.) Her debut album SOUR is everything we never knew we needed, and I am so grateful for that. It has the perfect mix of bitter/sad and nostalgic/sweet. I have had all 11 songs constantly looping on my Spotify since May, and my Spotify Wrapped this December is going to be pretty monotonous.

Here’s my ranking of every song on SOUR from least best to best (because there literally are no bad songs on the album).

“hope ur ok”

Now again, there is not a bad song on the album. Still, “hope ur ok” earned the least best spot simply because it listens more like a story than a song, and I find myself playing it the least.

“deja vu”

Again, a great song, but Olivia just outdid herself so much more with the next few songs. Something had to be near the bottom.

“Jealousy, jealousy”

This one might be surprising to some as it is such a popular song. Although it’s lower on the list, it’s the perfect song when you’re having a bad day. Trust me.

“Driver’s License”

Although I love it and will scream it on drives with my friends, “driver’s license” is the definition of overplayed. Though it shouldn’t take away from the actual quality of the song, I’ve just heard it one too many times.

“happier”

If you know, you know. And “happier” fits the title SOUR so well.

“brutal”

Coming in at number six, “brutal” reminds me so much of early 2000s music. It is the angry grunge song we all never knew we needed.

“favorite crime”

@Joshua Bassett sorry, it had to be done.

“enough for you”

This one might also be surprising to some, as I think most people would put it a little lower. But I love it so much. It’s the perfect song for that relationship that never was.

“1 step forward, 3 steps back”

This song is the perfect mix of Taylor Swift and Olivia. Simple, sweet, and powerful.

“Traitor”

The bridge on “traitor” is, in my opinion, the best on the entire album. “God I wish that you had thought this through / Before I went and fell in love with you / When she’s sleeping in the bed we made / Don’t you dare forget about the way / You betrayed me.” Literally, how did she come up with that?

“good 4 u”

Coming out on top — my absolute favorite on the album hands down. I cannot stop listening to it. It is not even a daily occurrence, it’s an hourly occurrence. Without a doubt, it will be my top played song of 2021 and probably 2022, IDK, we’ll see. Thank you for this song, Olivia.

I am counting down the days until Olivia goes on tour and hopefully releases her next album (SWEET?). I still can’t believe this album was only her debut, and her career is just getting started. I am so excited to see what she releases next. Let me know your own opinions on SOUR and how they compare to mine!
