The Pros of Having an (Almost) All Black Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Are you prone to spilling coffee all over yourself? Want to wake up early enough to possibly change into something other than the pajamas you were wearing to bed? Do you want to look sleek and classy, even if you may not be the most fashionably savvy?

Well, I have the answer for you. And that is an all black wardrobe.

When I was going through my closet last year, I realized that almost everything that wasn’t a dark color looked completely wretched. Whether or not it was new, I managed to spill something on it, or it had faded in the wash–something. But that wasn’t happening to my darker clothes. I’ve had some of my basic tees for longer than I’m willing to admit, but they still look exactly the same as when I bought them! I’ve always been attracted to darker clothing. To me it is more comfortable, easy to style, and timeless. Ever since that realization, my wardrobe has gone above and beyond just having a few black shirts, and now almost everything I own is on the grey-black spectrum (with a few maroons and navy blues in there as well). In addition, it has stayed that way for almost a year and a half. Even though now I’m picking up some clothes in lighter colors (just one or two so that I have some options if I want them), I’ve never been happier with my wardrobe, and here’s why:

1. Black is timeless

Every season, clothing stores always offer some “staple” pieces, one of them being the little black dress. Everyone agrees: all-black outfits are always in style, no matter what the season is. And they always look classy.

2. Black is for everyone

I don’t know what it is about wearing all black, but it looks good on everybody. There is no person that can’t rock a pair of black skinny jeans with a black tank top. It just doesn’t happen.

3. It makes shopping so easy!

If your wardrobe only consists of a few colors, especially really dark ones, it is super easy to pick those out in stores. Most stores don’t offer a ton of dark pieces, so when you look at the few they have, you’re done. This isn’t a bad thing: it can actually help with preventing you from overspending on clothes (we’re all guilty) because you only have a few options to pick from. If the store doesn’t have what you like, just move on!

4. Making smaller wardrobes is really simple

Since stores don’t often carry a lot of darker colors during certain times, it’s really easy to only have a few pieces of clothing. It’s great, especially if you travel around a lot, like going from the dorms to home–so much simpler with a small wardrobe! And all the pieces you have work together perfectly, so it’s a win-win.

5. It makes styling a breeze

When all of your clothes fall in the same spectrum of colors, it is really difficult to find an outfit that doesn’t go together! This is really helpful during busy weeks or days where you might be too focused on exams to put together a really intense outfit. The fact that all your clothes go together means that you can have an effort free but still really cute look every day!

6. It’s easy to hide stains

It’s so easy to spill coffee all over yourself in the morning, or afternoon, or literally whenever. If you’re one of those people who tends to spill food or drinks on themselves often, don’t fret! Unlike those white tank tops, you can barely see them on black shirts and pants!

7. It’s versatile

The great thing about all the “staple” pieces in your wardrobe is that they can work for anything! If you have a bunch of black dresses, they can be dressed up or dressed down, and you’d look perfect for any occasion. Same with a pair of black pants!

No matter your shape, size, or style, having an all black wardrobe can be for anyone!
