It’s really easy to get stuck mixing and matching the same pieces from your closet. While I do adore the classic navy and white combination, I sometimes feel like my wardrobe is too conventional. It’s easy to update your look and go outside the box with color and pattern combinations, utilizing pieces you already own. Sometimes the cutest outfits are the ones you wouldn’t expect. I guarantee you’ll get more compliments than ever if you put together unexpected colors and/or patterns!

Turquoise of any shade is usually viewed as a bright color in its own right. This means it normally gets paired with neutral colors such as gray or white. What many Collegiettes don’t realize is that turquoise is gorgeous when paired with other bright colors like orange or pink! When done the correct way (you don’t want to go out looking like an Easter egg), the perfect bright color combination can make you stand out in the crowd for all the right reasons.

Instead of matching or contrasting colors, try to put together outfits that use the same color, but in different hues. A bright raspberry blazer paired with a lighter rose shirt is super cute, and a little unexpected because our natural instinct is to dress in contrast.  If wearing too much of the same color worries you, accessorize with a contrasting color to brighten the outfit up even more.

Patterned pieces are also worn with neutral pieces most of the time. I know I sometimes get nervous pairing together two interesting patterns for fear of looking not put together, but I’ve been trying hard to overcome this fear and have received nothing but compliments when I do so! Instead of wearing your stripes with a classic navy blazer, throw on a leopard print cardigan or a plaid skirt. Don’t be shy when it comes to patterns because after all, you’re meant to stand out!

Take a minute to look at your own wardrobe and see which pieces would mix and match well together. Exciting new outfits are already in your closet, it’s up to you to have the confidence to rock some crazy combinations!
