Lana, Lorde and Dua Lipa: Alt-Pop Artists About to Dominate 2017

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

We’ve had plenty from our favorite divas in 2016. Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Ariana all released albums, leaving us thirsty for more iconic tunes. For 2017, we’re ready for the alternative pop girls to steal the scene. Here’s the big three we’re looking forward to.

1. Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has been on the scene for a while now, giving us many songs with a “sip wine in the bathtub” vibe. It’s great, but she has something new for us in 2017 — another album that she says will be more “socially aware.” Like many artists, Del Rey has found inspiration in the ever-changing political climate, saying “so because of that, the sound just got really updated, and I felt like it was more wanting to talk to the younger side of the audience that I have. I guess it’s a little more socially aware. It’s kind of a global feeling.” Del Rey says that this album is for the fans: “I love the sound of the record, it has everything that I love sonically. I made my first four albums for me, but this one is for my fans and about where I hope we are all headed.”

Del Rey also notes the album is going to have a ’50s and ’60s feel and “retro sensibility with a futuristic flare,” which is already prominent in the album’s leading single “Love” which was released on Feb. 18. The music video for “Love” shows a bunch of couples being transported from earth to space from the flower power of Del Rey’s music. It’s a true interstellar anthem, and we can’t wait to see what she puts out next.

2. Lorde

We were first graced with Lorde’s presence back in 2013, with her debut album “Pure Heroine.” “Pure Heroine” has been critically praised and received several awards, including two Grammys from its lead single “Royals.” We’ve been waiting on a new Lorde album for four years, and we’re about to be hit with it in June 2017. Her sophomore album’s writing was finished last summer, and after closing working with Jack Antonoff, it’s getting ready to be released to the world. Lorde promises a “more adult affair” in comparison to “Pure Heroine,” which chronicles the trials and tribulations of teenage transition into adulthood. We’re about to get some of this adult content real soon, Lorde teased a clip on twitter from imwaitingforit.com. The clip cites dates as March 2, 2017 New York City, and March 3, 2017 New Zealand. The rumored single “Green Light” is said to premiere on March 2, just in time to get some buzz before her debut Saturday Night Live performance on March 11.

3. Dua Lipa

If Lana Del Rey is the queen and Lorde is the princess, all signs point to Dua Lipa being our next rising star. Dua Lipa is an English singer-songwriter, and you may have blasted her hit single “Hotter Than Hell” on the radio all summer. Lipa’s debut album premieres June 2, 2017, after continuously pushing back the release date from its original Sept. 30 date. We’re not mad though, since she’s already given us multiple bops from the album, including “Be The One,” “New Love,” “Last Dance” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah).” Lipa has said the album will have a “dark pop” tone. Lipa says, “I’ve been working with some amazing people. A couple of things have happened where I’ve had to stop and pinch myself.” One of her main reasons for pushing the album’s release back was to add collaborations, so we can’t wait to see who she has teamed up with for these dark pop hits.
