At first, I never saw the appeal. Some of my friends had collected these mini figurines, but I could not justify paying for an inanimate object. Eventually, I saw enough adorable angel babies to be convinced, but the Strawberry Love Series sealed the deal. I ran over to the local toy store in Amherst and purchased one, then another, and so on. Suddenly, I’m rearranging my desk to make space for a growing collection of tiny cherub babies wearing animal headgear. So yes, this is my official confession: I am fully, unapologetically obsessed with Sonny Angel babies.
The Mystery Behind My Latest Obsession
For anyone unfamiliar, Sonny Angels are small collectible figures originally from Japan. They are known for their signature look: little cherub babies with wings, minimal expressions, and themed hats ranging from animals to sweet treats. The catch? You usually buy them in blind boxes, so you never know which one you’re going to get.
There’s something dangerously addictive about the mystery of it all. It’s not just buying a toy, it’s the thrill of the reveal. Will it be the one you wanted? A duplicate? A weird one you didn’t even notice on the box? Every unboxing is an exciting surprise.
Tiny Companions, Big Comfort
There’s also something kind of comforting about them. In a world where everything feels so serious all the time, these tiny figures are unserious in the best way. They don’t have a purpose; they just exist, and somehow, that’s enough. The Sonny Angel HIPPERS collection makes them even more fun, since you can stick them onto any smooth surface. I love having one on my laptop because it’s like a little companion while I go through my daily tasks. A big part of the fun is seeing which adorable ones my friends have collected, too.
Cute… But At What Cost?
That being said, sometimes I can’t ignore the price. Because of what they are, I get why some people think they are unreasonable. A typical Sonny Angel blind box is usually around $10–$15, which doesn’t sound terrible at first… until you realize you might not even get the one you want. Once you start buying multiple, or if you are trying to chase a specific one, it adds up fast. Resale prices can range from anywhere to $30 to hundreds of dollars, which honestly feels a little insane. The rarity, the hype, and the “I need that one” mindset all feed into it. So yeah, logically I know it’s just a tiny figurine… but that doesn’t stop me from wanting another one.
I haven’t gone completely overboard (yet). My collection is somewhat reasonable, so I try telling myself I don’t need every single series… but that’s a lot easier said than done. Every time I see a new drop or a cute collection, I’m immediately tempted. At this point, I’m definitely hooked, so if you see me on campus opening a tiny box with an unreasonable amount of excitement, mind your business. Or better yet, come trade with me! And to anyone judging the obsession, don’t knock it until your own little Sonny is sitting on your desk, silently supporting you through deadlines!
