How To Stay Connected with High School Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Collegiettes, we know how busy it is to be living the college life, especially Freshman year. You’re crazed from your classes, trying to make new friends, going to club meetings, rushing Greek life, and somehow also finding time to study for your exams. As much fun as it all is, it can be stressful, and it can prevent you from keeping in contact with your high school friends. Here are 5 foolproof ways to make sure your high school bonds stay strong!

1) Snapchat

You’re always on the run.  Whether, you’re on your way to class, or you’re in a rush to grab something to eat on your lunch break, you’re always doing something. Thankfully, there’s an app for that: Snapchat.  Send your friends from home a selfie of you as you walk to class, draw something funny, or take a picture of something cool happening around campus. Not only will this allow you to keep in constant contact with your friends, but it will allow them to learn about what your campus is like and vice versa.

2) Facetime

While you’re walking to class, take out your phone and Facetime a friend to catch up!  Not only will you be able to talk to them, but you’ll be able to see their face and all their reactions to your latest crazy stories.  Best of all, you’re multi-tasking.

3) Visit Them

The best way to see how your friend is doing at their new school?  Visit!  Plan a trip to stay with your friend for a weekend at their school.  Make sure your friend takes you to all the campus “hot spots” so you can get a feel for what it’s like to live there!  Go out and enjoy all the nightlife that the college has to offer, and make sure to meet all your friends’ friends.  Chances are, if they are friends with your high school bud, they must be pretty cool.

4) Snail Mail

It might be a bit old-school now, but who doesn’t enjoy getting mail?  Send a letter once a week to your high school BFF and have your friend do the same.  It will give you something to look forward to the whole week and you’ll learn so much about what’s going on in their life.

5) Send packages

If you’re loving the snail mail idea, amp it up by sending packages back and forth.  Even sending something as simple as some candy could really brighten a friends’ day.

Don’t let your high school friendships weaken from the distance! Good friends can be hard to find so make sure to cherish the ones you have. Good luck!
