Have you ever thought about that friend you have who’s off studying abroad somewhere cool like Hawaii and wondered, ‘Wow, what nail polish is she wearing?’ Well, I don’t know where you’ve been, but now there’s an app for that!

SHELF Cosmetics, a new app created by the amazing Aviva Kamler that “enables women to track, evaluate, and share their favorite nail polish colors with the touch of a button,” allows users to buy nail polish from brands like Butter, Essie, OPI, Chanel, and many more. Users can also interact through the social media platform of the app. You can see what other nail polish aficionados are wearing your shade right now and where they’re posting from.

As described by UMass’s brand ambassador Michell Huang, “SHELF started out as just an idea. The chaotic world of beauty and cosmetics can become confusing and overwhelming to the typical consumer, and CEO and founder Aviva Kamler wanted to address this problem to offer a solution.” We all know how hard it is to decide between certain cosmetics, and it’s hard to find a community who cares about that stuff in the same way you do. Luckily, SHELF offers both the community aspect and their expertise.

Michelle’s favorite part of the app is the community. Users can follow certain colors and brands around the world and follow other users wearing them — you can even like posts and leave comments. (Michelle’s favorite brands to follow are Sinful Colors and Essie).

Michelle got started with SHELF because of her nail art Instagram @GirlyOh. She says, “When I came across this brand ambassador internship, I knew it was perfect for me. It wasn’t even for a resume builder; I just genuinely wanted it.”

The app is a great way to keep up with seasonal trends. Wondering what colors are hot for fall or how people are styling their cute nails? Just search “fall” and tons of pictures of nail colors will pop up against autumnal settings, flannels, and pumpkin spice. If you’re looking for a way to broaden your fashion and style expertise, want to become part of a diverse cosmetic community, or just want to look at pretty pictures (#NailSpo?), this app is for you!
