We are currently living in a PANDEMIC, not to mention one of the most critical times in governmental and political history. I want to start out by being straight up and saying that everything you are feeling right now is completely valid and normal. It is nearly impossible to escape some of our harshest and most stressful thoughts, but maintaining your mental health and well being comes first and is extremely important!

When was the last time you did something for yourself? Something that made YOU happy? These months have felt so hectic and chaotic that sometimes it’s hard to make time to do things that make us feel good about ourselves. My first tip is to take just a little bit of time out of each day to do something that will help you to relax, something you enjoy.

Another point I want to emphasize is the benefit of physical activity. I’m not talking about running ten miles a day or working yourself until you’re about to fall over. Physical activity comes in so many forms. Walks, runs, bike rides, house cleaning, yoga, walking up and down the stairs, and so much more. Moving your body in any way, shape, or form will immediately improve your mood. One form of body movement I have found especially helpful is yoga. This is a practice that exercises your body and mind, allowing immediate stress relief and a sense of inner peace. If you’re up for it, give it a try!

While on the topic of yoga, I want to talk about meditation. I know this isn’t for everyone, but it’s all about finding a routine that works for you! I have found meditation extremely effective in calming my thoughts and busy mind right when I wake up and just before I go to sleep. If this is something you may be interested in, download the app “Headspace.” It has multiple quick and easy to follow meditation routines sorted into various categories. Meditation has helped me to focus more thoroughly with school work and sleep better during the night.

One last thing I want to focus on is the importance of stepping away from the screen. We live in a virtual world right now. No matter what your age or profession is, everything is being done through technology. If you really think about it, we go from being on our phones in the morning to staring at a computer screen all day, and then back to the cell phones at night time. It is SO important to make time where we can walk away. We are in the middle of October, so step outside to take a look at the foliage! The colors are so beautiful and eye catching this time of year. Even if it’s for a short period of time, treat yourself to some non-screen time. You deserve it.

We are living in a time where it is extremely easy to fall down a wormhole of anxious and stressful thoughts and practices. Although all of our ways of coping may be different, find a routine, or set of routines, that works for you. Create opportunities for yourself! Despite the hardships we are facing, there are many positives to consider and apply to our everyday lives. You got this.
