A New Beginning: My First Fall at UMass

It was a hot summer day, and everyone in the house was filled with excitement. Suitcases and random stuff covered the floor as we all rushed to get ready to leave. Then there was me, sitting in my room, waiting to leave for college — a moment I had been waiting for since high school. Although I was nervous about starting a new chapter in my life, I was excited. I was ready to embrace myself. The goals and dreams I had made me feel prepared to leave and just see awaited for me next.

Orientation Week: The Start of Something New

The first day of orientation week felt great. I introduced myself to a lot of people and thought we would all become a big group of friends. Throughout the entire week, I met even more people — we exchanged numbers, Instagrams, and Snapchats. Everything felt like a dream and just how I imagined college life would be.

During orientation week, the days were planned for us, and we followed our orientation leaders everywhere. But once that week ended and classes started, I began feeling a little out of place. Most of the friends I met during orientation never showed up on my way again. I got lost trying to find my classes and didn’t know what to do on days when I didn’t have any. I felt a little disappointed, a little bored, but I knew it was not going to last for long.

Finding Comfort in the Fall

Since everything takes time, I slowly started to adjust. Then fall came, and everything changed. Fall has always been my favorite season, but UMass made it extra special! The beautiful view, the leaves falling on your shoulders as you walk, and the feeling of listening to music by the pond — everything felt surreal. Even long walks across campus started feeling short.

Fall is also Homecoming season, one of the best experiences I’ve had. Families come to campus, people cheer at the tailgates, and everyone’s energy feels contagious. Getting ready for hockey games quickly became one of my favorite traditions. Fall was when I finally felt connected to UMass. It was when I paused, enjoyed the moment, and truly appreciated all the activities and events the school held.

Finding My Place

Fall also came with midterms, but the school has a way of easing the stress and creating a positive environment. This was the time when I began to branch out. I reminded myself that while I was in a new environment, I shouldn’t lose the excitement I came with. I started making more friends, joining more clubs, and truly enjoying my time — even through the little stresses.

I truly believe in the saying, “Wherever you go, it is what you make out of it.” I try to put myself out there and take advantage of every opportunity and fun event UMass offers. There’s always something happening here — it’s hard to be bored if you put yourself out there.
