Dear Undecided Students, Here’s Why to Choose UMass Amherst

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

If you’re reading this as a senior in high school who has barely any time left to choose your college, I feel you. Picking your next steps after you graduate is a huge life decision, but it doesn’t have to be something you stress over, thanks to UMass Amherst. Here’s why picking UMass was the best decision I ever made.

#1 Dining

Obviously, if you applied to UMass, you already know this one. If you didn’t get a chance to tour, this is all the more reason for you to choose UMass. One average meal here is greater than any meal at any other school, in my humble opinion. If that’s not convincing enough, on Halloween, we have steak and lobster night.

People & Social Life

A big school could seem scary, but I think UMass is perfect for anyone looking for a school of any size. My reasoning behind that is, because UMass is such a large school, everyone is able to find a community with which they can connect. There are an endless amount of friends, clubs, and support.

Our Beautiful Campus

UMass Amherst has one of the most beautiful college campuses that I’ve ever seen, and I toured a lot of schools in my day; from Ireland to California. The best part about it? UMass is getting newer and newer buildings as we speak! The new student union was just completed, as well as a brand new dining hall. Both buildings are stunning, modern, and sustainable. Can’t forget to mention the campus pond and the tallest academic research library in the WORLD!

Opportunities & Connections

With the number of majors, on-campus organizations, and alumni, UMass can offer students a million connections. As only a sophomore, I have held two jobs on campus, one internship, as well as took advantage of some of the many resources available. The school wants to see you succeed and will help you in doing that.

Sports

I mean, our men’s hockey team just brought the trophy home from the national championship, and personally, it felt like I won the championship myself. If you aren’t a D1 athlete, fear not, as we have countless club and intramural sports to offer, such as pickleball and Kan Jam. Not a huge athlete? You can always support the teams at one of our amazing tailgates.

When I began applying to colleges, UMass Amherst was my last choice (financial safety). I wanted to get out of the state, avoid winter at all costs, and experience something totally new. To those who don’t want to see family or friends from home, you don’t have to if you don’t want to! For anyone who hates the cold as much as I do, UMass feels so warm, I promise. Regardless of your college choice, you are bound to experience something new, and if it’s not for you, you can transfer. Just know, all the transfers I’ve heard of are the ones coming to UMass…
