Coming Home to Your Dog: A Long Distance Love Story

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Everyone who has a dog at home understands the heartbreak of saying goodbye time and time again.

Every break, long weekend, or two days for your mom to do your laundry, will always conclude with the heartbreaking realization that while you can take your clean sheets back to the dorm… your true love must stay behind.

But instead of dwelling on watching their fuzzy, wagging tail in the rearview mirror as you drive away, I’d rather remind you (and myself) of the glorious moment when you reunite with those wet doggy kisses.

It starts when you turn off your car after finally pulling into the driveway and you hear the faint sound of barking from inside. But it’s not a deep, protective bark or a bark that says ‘I need food or attention;’ it’s the bark that says I know that smell! That’s the smell of one of my humans which I love very much!

You walk through the front door and are bombarded by kisses and hugs, but the only embrace that matters is the one scratching at your legs as you try to drag in your many bags.

Finally you get there, you’re absolutely covered in slobber and loose dog fur, and yet you couldn’t be any happier.

Cookies have been given, along with the traditional ear scratch.

Now the endless cuddling session and multitude of Snapchat stories will commence.

The next day or two should be full of tug of war and long walks, although more often than not it’s full of homework and Netflix (both of which your pup can participate in), as well as feeding your friend sneaky forkfuls under the dinner table.

Sadly, though, you must once again part.

But until that fateful day, embrace the love of your four-legged friend!
