Though the weather in Massachusetts is highly unpredictable, (it’s sunny today, but could hailstorm tomorrow,) spring is coming. That means us collegiettescan begin to shed our layers and start adding new springy things to our closets. However, you don’t have to fork over major cash to assemble a great spring wardrobe. You’ll be surprised to find out that what you already have in your closet makes the transition of seasons simple and easy on the wallet.

What you have: Sweaters

Sweaters are a godsend for those chilly winter months, as layering is crucial for keeping cozy while still looking polished. It’s the same for spring; it’s not 98 degrees out in April so there’s still a need for layering, even if it is lighter.

Transition tip:
Take your neutral colored sweaters and add a bit of much needed color by layering with a lightweight cotton camisole or v neck t-shirt. Try the new hot colors for spring in the orange and pink families. Also, try adding a skinny brown, black or gold leather belt to draw attention to your waist and create a flattering silhouette. However, make sure that the sweater or layers under aren’t too bulky, as you want to streamline your shape instead of bulking it up.

What you have: Scarves

I, like many other collegiettearound the nation have developed a bit of an… addiction. One that, no matter how hard I try, I cannot control. Ladies, I have a scarf addiction, and though it has wreaked havoc on my wallet, it has diversified my closet tremendously. Pashminas, lightweight cotton, long, short, loop, cable-knit, you name it, I have it, and I want to say that you can wear them all in the spring. There are just some things you should consider with each type.

Transition tip:
Pashminas and lightweight cotton scarves are a no-brainer in the spring, as they are light enough to add a layer of warmth and can complete an outfit that was otherwise dull. The cable-knit and heavier scarves are the variety that prove to be a bit trickier. I think that they can work when thrown over a loose tank top or t-shirt. It kind of gives a rocker or boho vibe that exudes effortless cool. The best thing about this look, and scarves in general, is that if you’re not feeling it, you can always take it off.

What you have: Tights

Those black tights that have become a staple in your winter wardrobe can be utilized just as much in the spring. Tights are a lifesaver when you and your pins are in a quick pinch, (you haven’t found time to shave, a fake tanning episode gone terribly wrong, etc…) and you must wear a skirt or dress. However, for the spring season, black is not the only hue to turn to.

Transition tip:
Tights are one of the cheapest and easiest pieces you can incorporate into your wardrobe to make a bold statement. They come in hundreds of colors, patterns and textures, so there is no excuse not to take them for a test drive this spring. Whether worn under your favorite dress or skirt, you can’t go wrong. Another way to wear tights this spring is to wear a standard black pair under blue or black denim cutoffs. Starlets like Nicole Richie and Lilly Allen have been spotted rocking this trendy combination.

What you have: Boots

Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that, while I love my scarves, I’m even more addicted to boots. Any color, shape, length or description, I love boots and wear them year round. Boots are extremely versatile for every season and, in my opinion, can make any outfit special.

Transition tip:
Literally take any kind of boot you have and wear it this spring. With longer boots, tuck your jeans or tights into them to complete your look. Or, with shorter boots, pair them with a floaty spring dress or denim shorts to add an edge. If you have biker boots from the fall, you invested well, as these are very on trend for spring. Go simple like Kate Moss and pair them with clean-cut basics and a great black leather satchel.

What you have: Oxfords

Whether you had a winternship or job first semester, the oxford is one of the most useful pieces in any collegiette closet.

Transition tip:
Oxfords are perfect for spring because they’re lightweight, easy to layer and give a fresh, preppy feel to any ensemble. Pair a solid colored oxford with your favorite denim shorts for a flirty, yet classic look. Also, oxfords over skinny jeans with a cute gladiator sandal or skinny waist belt are a great look when heading to class.

What you have: Sweater dress

For many a collegiette, the sweater dress was the go-to for those frigid winter nights when wanting to look cute, but stay warm. This dress can work for spring too and prove to be a great asset to any wardrobe.

Transition tip:
Ditch the tights you would usually put under this dress and dare to bare those legs! You can get away with showing a little leg because you’re covered on top. Add your hottest boots or heels and you have the perfect look that is both sophisticated and sexy!

Now that you have all of the tips down, you’re set for the spring days that will (hopefully) arrive soon. Remember to take risks! Trends take off when a daring girl makes a bold move. Grab your favorite winter garb and transform it for a perfect year-round look that just might take off!
