September 25, 2015 was a beautiful fall day: perfect for taking a stroll outside, picking
This show at Gillette was his biggest in the U.S. to date, with over 50,000 fans in attendance. “This is a lot bigger than I thought it was,” Sheeran joked after he opened with his hit “I’m a Mess”.
Before Ed hit the stage, the audience was graced with two fantastic opening acts: Christina Perri and Passenger. Knowing very little about Perri before the concert, I was hugely impressed with her vocal ability and stage presence. She sang some of her well-known hits, including “Jar of Hearts,” “A Thousand Years,” and “Human,” and received thunderous applause after her short 30 minute set.
After a brief break, British indie/folk singer Passenger took the stage. Passenger (for those who are unfamiliar, he is just one man, not a band) was raw, real, and hilarious. I was already a fan of his music and look forward to seeing him perform again when he returns to the Boston area. He is funny, talented, and just the right amount of angsty. I highly recommend
Ed sang a great set with a mix of his old hits, current songs, and covers of other well-known tracks – the perfect equation for a killer concert. The crowd sang along to every word, including “A Team,” “Drunk,” “Sing,” “Don’t,” and “Tenerife Sea.” He remixed his own songs, blended them together, and wove covers (including “Superstitious” by Stevie Wonder, “No Diggity” by Blackstreet, and Drake’s “Know Yourself”) in seamlessly. Ah, the beauty of a live performance. Â
The highlight of the night was when Ed brought out a very special guest performer. After a short speech about how exciting it is to meet and perform with his musical influences, he brought out Chris Martin (Coldplay), to the sheer delight of the audience. They sang a duet of Sheeran’s smash hit “Thinking Out Loud,” with Sheeran on guitar and Martin on piano. They then sang Coldplay’s “Yellow” (a crowd favorite). This was the cherry on top of a fabulous evening.
If you are an Ed Sheeran fan, I would wholeheartedly recommend seeing his show the next time he returns to the states. He put 110% into his performance, despite the fact that he’s been doing the same routine multiple nights a week for months. He really gave the impression that he loves his fans and appreciates how far they’ve brought him. At the end of his encore performance he talked about how his first show in the U.S. drew in a crowd of a whopping 175 people. And now he sold out his first-ever NFL stadium.
Can’t wait to see where he goes next. Cheers, Ed!
