I am, without a doubt, the biggest fan of Wicked. When the announcement of Wicked: For Good was released, I was completely obsessed, and I still am. One day, while doomscrolling on TikTok, an advertisement using the song “For Good” came across my FYP. Oddly enough, it made me overwhelmed with emotion. Immediately, I was reminded of something much more than a movie or a Broadway show; I was reminded of the special beauty of sisterhood.

Sisterhood, I’ve learned, is not just a relationship but a transformation. As Wicked depicts so beautifully, the girl you get lucky enough to walk through life with can change you in the best ways possible. Somehow, I hit the lottery with my sister. From the very beginning of our lives, we have been perfectly connected in every way possible, like puzzle pieces. Birthday parties, vacations, clothes, and at times a brain cell have been shared between us for our entire lives. My sister fills my heart with so much happiness that it feels like it could explode at times. I know that she is truly one in a million. My best friend, the green to my pink, and my better half in every way. I have been changed for good by your sisterhood.

When I started to think about the bond shared between Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked, it only felt natural to compare that relationship with my best friend, too. What I’ve grown to learn is that sisterhood isn’t just biological, because biologically, I don’t actually have any sisters. Sisterhood can also be the women you choose to be a part of your family. Having a sister means having someone who shows up for you, someone who sees you, and someone who loves you unconditionally. In college, especially, sisterhood can mean more than companionship; it can be a lifeline.

The themes of sisterhood and genuine heartwarming friendship in Wicked feel like a necessity in every stage of a woman’s life. The bond between two people so different yet so similar is what the story is centered on, and it’s an aspect of why many of us resonate so deeply with it. In a world that feels loud, overwhelming, and constantly changing, the women who ground us are often the ones who shape us the most.

I see sisterhood everywhere, surrounding me in the most beautiful ways. I see sisterhood in my mom and her best friend, which just so happens to be my best friend’s mom. I see sisterhood in small reminders. The sound of a squeaky shoe transports me back to the time my sister almost killed me over my loud and wet sneakers after a long day at Disney World. I see it in the UMass cup that she got me for my birthday because she remembered that I wanted it. I see it in sage green, her favorite color. I see it in my old college dorm room, in my childhood bedroom, and in her old childhood home. Although unoriginal, because I’m sure everyone with a best friend or sister understands, I see my sister in everything around me because she means everything to me.

Whether it’s a sister by blood, a sorority big who took you under her wing, a roommate turned soulmate, or your day-one best friend from home, sisterhood is one of the most powerful forces we as women get to experience. It softens us, stays with us, and grows with us throughout all seasons of life.

If Wicked has taught me anything, it’s that the sisters, best friends, and other women don’t just accompany us through life; they change us for good.

Whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend”
