Cats and Spirituality: How Your Baby Is Protecting You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

If you are as interested in spirituality and witchery as I am, you must have heard something about how cats are divinely important.

Most of us know cats as our cuddly buddies who walk with sass and sleep a lot, but they’re actually great companions for another reason. They see and can protect you from evil spirits. In the world of spirituality, cats are appreciated as protectors and even healers! (1) It is said that cats can sense a lot more than humans, so it is important to observe and respect your cat when they seem to be doing something unusual.

In ancient Egypt, there was the cat goddess Bastet, known as the goddess of femininity and protector of the home. She defended the home from any negativity, including evil spirits and disease. It was considered illegal to kill a cat, and when a family’s cat would die, tradition expected them to shave off their eyebrows! (2)

It is also said that “all dogs are Christian, all cats are Buddhist” because cats are calm and collected while dogs are generally more sociable and excited. In Buddhism, it is thought that the souls of cats are the old souls of the dead. This, alongside many other ancient stories, seems to have been the basis for today’s idea of cats as defenders.

Cats are also known to have awoken their humans from nightmares, sometimes rubbing up against them or nudging their owners’ faces with their little paws. “Psychics believe that the potency of feline astral energy extends to expelling the otherworldly trespassers of your unconsciousness.” (3) This idea of cats’ astral energy is very popular among the spiritualist community, and it is often speculated that when cats rub against their owners or allow full contact when being petted, they are actually sharing their magic and giving the humans some of their astral energy. This astral power is known to naturally expel evil or negative spirits.

There is also the idea that the different colors of cats can define their spiritual powers. This website explains the magical powers of each different color of a cat.

Here are the most common:

Black cats signify black magic and witchery, but also protection and wisdom. They are not bad luck!

White cats are believed to have a connection to the moon and are known to be healers and good omens.

Two-tone cats (a combination of black, orange, gray, or white) bring wisdom, good energy, and common sense. Everyone needs some of that sometimes!

Tabby cats give every situation energy, prosperity, and good luck.

Calico cats are known as the triple goddesses. It is very rare for calicos to be male, so the idea that they are goddesses who bring protection, happiness, and luck wherever they go is very suiting.

Now go give your cat some love! It may seem as though they treat you like their servant sometimes, but it’s just because they’re working just as hard as you to keep your home happy and safe. Fluffy little angels.
