Campus Celebrity: Matt Schell (New England Patriots Video Assistant)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.
Our Campus Celebrity this week is the New England Patriots’ Video Assistant, Matt Schell!

Brittaney: So what is your official role with the Patriots?
Matt: I am their part-time video assistant. This will be my 5th year with the team.

Brittaney: What do you do as a video assistant?
Matt: During the Patriots’ training camp over the summer, I film practices and player workouts. The filming of practices is typically done up on a scissor lift. At the beginning of practices, I also film the quarterbacks during their warm up periods. During game days in season, I film the game from a booth which is later viewed by all of the coaches.

Brittaney: How did you get the opportunity to work with the Patriots?
Matt: I was very fortunate because my current boss asked me to work for him when one of his employees left on short notice. My boss is a great family friend and an awesome guy so I am very appreciative of the opportunity he gave me.

Brittaney: What are some special projects that you’ve done for the team?
Matt: A lot of what I do is film practices and specific drills for coaches to analyze, but sometimes I aid coaches in breaking down the film or finding specific plays they think work best and want to use in the games.

Brittaney: What is your favorite part about your job?
Matt: Probably that I get to meet new people every year. When players come to the team I get to meet them and find out what they are like as regular people. When I talk to them on a more personal level, I get to see their true personalities.

Brittaney: What are your future plans?
Matt: I’m hoping that I can become a scouting assistant once I graduate college. That would be the first step down my career path. Working with the Patriots has structured my career goals because I wouldn’t have been able to see what scouts actually do on a day-to-day basis if I hadn’t worked for the team.

Brittaney: What’s your favorite memory from your involvement with the team?
Matt: Three years ago I was given the opportunity to go to the Super Bowl with the team for the week. Being at a Super Bowl was an amazing experience. They lost that Super Bowl which was tough to handle. I was given an AFC championship ring though and that definitely lightened things up a bit!
