Around the World: 5 Current Events You Should Know About

Ever get confused with all of the news and media outlets overwhelming you with so many stories that you can’t keep up? Here are five of some of the most recent events from the U.S. and around the world to help keep you up to date on what’s happening around the globe!

1. Obama’s Executive Order on Immigration

On November 20, President Obama announced that he would use his powers as President to stop millions of immigrants from being forced to leave the United States. His policy will allow them to have the chance to stay in the United States in order to obtain a work permit. This will be for immigrants who have a child who is a legal citizen of the United States and immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least five years. All of the qualified immigrants will also go through an application process that includes a background check and paying taxes. Click here for more info. 

2.  Ferguson Unrest 

Officer Darren Wilson who shot and killed unarmed Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri was not indicted by the grand jury last Monday. Officer Darren Wilson resigned from the Ferguson police force, citing the safety of the Ferguson community and police as his main reason for leaving. Protests have sprung up in major cities across the United States in response to the grand jury decision and Brown case, as well as UMass Amherst yesterday afternoon.

3. Suicide Bomber at Volleyball Tournament in Afghanistan

At a volleyball match in Eastern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber killed 45 people after Afghanistan approved for soldiers from the United States and other countries in NATO, the North Atlantic Trade Organization, to remain there. They are going to be remaining in the country in order to help train the Afghan security forces. The United States is still bent on its fight against the Taliban. Although they are no longer as large in their influence, the group is still attempting to push their extreme, religious political agenda in order to gain more support.

4. The Sterilization Camp in India

Thirteen women who were operated on at Nemichand Jain Cancer and Research Centre at Pendari village of Takhatpur block on November 8th became ill and died recently after their operations. Now, medical reports have come out that there were small traces of poisonous substances in the medicines given to the women. Many of the doctors at the camp violated various safety measures and were very careless during the procedures. Not only were there women who died from the irresponsible surgeons, but there are about 130 women who have also ill because of their inability to take proper health and safety measures.

5. The Green Climate Fund Gets Support from 30 Nations

The Global Climate Change Movement has been gaining momentum over the past few weeks. The Green Climate Fund is an organization whose goal is to raise money to help third world countries combat global climate change and reduce carbon emissions. The United States had already pledged $3 billion along with other countries such as France and the United Kingdom who have pledged around $1 billion each. The money will also be used to help the developing countries create clean energy sources.
