5 Reasons to Love Benedict Cumberbatch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Benagle Cucumberbatch? Benigle Cumblebirch? Bendy Crabbybatch?

When you say Benedict Cumberbatch’s name out loud to an unaware friend, these may be some of the ridiculous names they repeat after you and it makes sense.  Benedict Cumberbatch? Is that serious?

Yes it is! Yet once you unknowingly start to become a fan of his, the name becomes the easiest thing to say. British, handsome, and single, Benedict Cumberbatch is easily becoming one of the world’s best actors. Besides leading one of the BBC’s most popular shows, Sherlock, and voicing the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Benedict recently starred in some Oscar nominated films, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County. Even earlier, Benedict starred in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek: Into Darkness as the ruthless killer, Khan.

Rather quickly, Benedict has gotten his name out as one of the best in his field.  So, for all you lost souls who have not discovered the perfection that is Benedict Cumberbatch, here are just a few reasons why you should join “The Cumber Collective” and love him as we do!

1. He’s a brilliant actor.

Obviously. Why would he be so popular if he wasn’t good at what he did? From playing a raging villain to a kind hearted soldier to a sociopathic detective, Benedict has spread his acting abilities to every corner. It’s pretty incredible to watch an actor jump around between so many different kinds of roles and deliver them so incredibly well. I watched him in Sherlock and fell in love with his awkwardly emotional portrayal of the investigator. I watched him as Khan in Star Trek and, by the end of the film, this character scared me so much I nearly forgot it was Benedict playing him.

2. He’s a dork.

The second the cameras are off, Benedict is back to his usual dorky self, dancing around in his Khan outfit, throwing fake punches into the camera, laughing at the stupidest jokes. I think this is what makes him incredibly endearing and relatable as a person: his dorkiness. So many of us (especially his fans) are probably the biggest dorks in the world, so it is so awesome to have an idol to look up to who, like us, would totally fangirl over Harrison Ford and start making wookie sounds to express his appreciation.

3. He has a good heart.

I have been incredibly impressed with how kind Benedict has been to all his fans around the world. With a growing number of fans every day, Benedict is extremely sweet to every single fan he meets. Besides his kindness with his fans, Benedict is always aware of the unfortunate. Just a few groups he associates with are The Prince’s Trust, a group dedicated to helping disadvantaged children in the UK, the Motor Neurone Disease Association, and the LGBT ally community. He is incredibly dedicated to fighting for equal rights, paying close attention to the disadvantages that both women and the LGBT community face in the world. With his popularity, he tries to make the world a better place.

4. He’s British.

Yeah okay, so maybe not the best reason ever, but seriously, it helps! There’s something about the British people that every man and woman loves. Picture your stereotypical British man… a lovely accent, a poised manner, a tea lover… Benedict is all those things.

5. He’s so humble.

As popular as he is and as many compliments he has received, Benedict remains truly humble to everyone and to himself. It’s so adorable to watch him blush and stammer when a reporter remarks how mad the girls are for him or how he handles all the fans adoring over him. Honestly, his humility makes us all love him all the more.

Have you fallen ill with Cumberbatch fever yet, ladies?
