At the beginning of last week, I decided to take a social media cleanse. Scrolling and liking had become a huge part of my day and I felt like I was losing touch with my surroundings. To add onto that, I knew I had a busy week ahead of me and I wanted to be more focused and productive in completing my tasks. What started as something that was meant to foster productivity turned into one of the most blissful and peaceful weeks of my life. I found myself rediscovering some reasons to be happy that I will share with you!

1. There are still some nice people out there

To be honest, the first day of my self-proclaimed social media cleanse was hard. I was so used staring at my phone on my walks to class but instead I found myself smiling and waving to people across campus. Instead of scrolling through Instagram before class started, I found myself talking to my neighbor. The more time I spent engaging with the people around me, the more confident I felt in humanity. In a world where we are constantly reminded of crooks and criminals, it is important to remind yourself that even amongst all of the negativity there are a lot of good people.

2. You have made it through every single hardship even when you thought you couldn’t

When you give yourself some time to reflect, your mind often wanders to all of your past mistakes and consequently fills your mind with regret. I’m guilty of doing so, but I eventually decided to turn something that is seemingly so negative, into a positive. Facing hardship is inevitable; whether it is a tough breakup or socioeconomic struggle, remember that you have made it this far in life. Be proud of where you have made it because this is a reflection of your hard work and dedication. If you are reflecting and not feeling the pride you want to feel, use it as encouragement to better yourself and your goals.

3. Look through old memories

There is no greater feeling than looking back at an old photograph and remembering the laughs that were shared. Looking back on home movies or old photobooks can help you remember the good ole days and how one day you’ll be looking back on the memories you are making now and thinking about how lucky you were to have these experiences.

4. Sunny days are right around the corner

It’s easy to forget about the happiness that sunshine brings after what feels like an eternal winter, but we are reaching the point in time where the flowers are beginning to bloom, and the sun is starting the shine. Picnics in the park and beach days are coming soon enough. But for now, take a minute and sit outside. Enjoy the feeling of the sun against your skin, but make sure to wear some sunscreen!

5. You are loved beyond belief

We interact with millions of people and you never know the impact you can make on their lives. Whether you know it or not, remember that someone loves you. That being said, don’t be afraid to call an old friend, cousin or grandparent and tell them how much they mean to you. It will not only brighten their day, but will make you feel better.
