5 Badass Horror Movie Heroines

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

The overused “damsel in distress” theme in Hollywood is so overrated. When there is a horror film with a female lead, on the other hand, whether hero or villain, that character suddenly becomes 100% more badass. In light of Halloween, here is cinematic histories top horror movie heroines. SPOILER ALERTS!

Sidney Prescott: ScreamThe epitome of a horror movie heroine, she uses her vast knowledge of horror movie history to not only survive but thrive in this classic 1996 film. No slasher – or boyfriend – will stand in her way.

Best Moment:

Dana Polk: The Cabin in the WoodsWhile Dana may not survive her horror movie, she went out in style. Her death was a middle-finger to the villains of her film, and possibly the most badass death on the list.

Best Moment:

Carrie White: CarrieRevenge on your bullies is something a lot of people dream about. Carrie gets all that and more in the legendary 1976 horror classic.

Best Moment:

Sarah: The DescentTrapped in a cave with her girlfriends (and some frenemies), Sarah not only fights off the hungry crawlers hunting down her group, but she exacts revenge on the homewrecking friend having an affair with her late husband. Even when it seems all hope is lost, Sarah’s defiant nature refuses to quit.

Best Moment:

This Halloween, don’t let the guys have all the fun. Celebrate by watching some horror movie heroines kick some *ss. Happy Halloween, Collegiettes!
