As seniors at UMass, it’s kind of a right of passage to acknowledge all of the things that have changed over our four years here. From Hamp burritos to Paul Markham, it’s a sad day to realize a lot of the younger students have no idea what life was like freshman year. Let me help you take a trip down memory lane…
1. When old Hamp was perfection
The most monumental change to our college career: no more hamp burritos, hard ice cream, the best sit down breakfasts… #bringbackhampburritos2016
2. When the Honors College wasn’t just a ritzy place to live
Did people even know the honors college existed before the residential community was built?
3. When we were actually good at hockey
4. When there wasn’t a limit on Berk cookies
5. When we had UMail before Google Apps
Did anyone even check their email back then?
6. When ‘Welcome to the Zoo’ by Paul Markham was the voice of our people
“Welcome to the zoo where we drink beer”–eloquent, if I do say so myself.
7. When University Primetime was almost a thing
8. When you spent at least one night a weekend at the old Sig Ep your freshman year
Was it really an old elementary school? The world may never know. RIP Olympia Drive & the long walks through campus getting to this mysterious place.
9. When there was (and still is) construction EVERYWHERE…
10. When classes starting at 8 AM was actually a thing
…Not that that extra half hour really made a difference but it’s the thought that counts.
11. When eduroam didn’t exist yet and you had to connect to UMass Secure 1X
12. When you actually cared enough to participate in a southwest riot
13. When Baby Berk took swipes
14. When you’d go to Gillette thinking it would actually be like a big college football game tailgate
15. When Nemo hit and the dorms got a little rowdy
At a certain point there was only so much the RAs could do.
16. When there weren’t tailgates
…And everyone older than you is baffled by the fact that you barely got to tailgate in all four years here.
17. When the UMass Memes page was the best thing ever
18. When Tiesto was moved from the start of freshman year to February, and then all EDM was kind of just canceled forever
19. When Old Bluewall didn’t have sushi, a salad station, and a full bakery
Life was so simple back then. #TBT
20. When Blarney was still fun
21. When Bill Cosby wasn’t a creep
Sadly, things have changed a lot in our four years here, but at least we’ve paid our time. I feel bad for all those who never got to experience claustrophobic Sig Ep nights in what felt like the middle of nowhere, or the glory of Hamp burritos. RIP to all the great things that UMass has had to say goodbye to.
