Why Stranger Things Should Be Your Next Netflix Choice

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

If you’ve logged onto any social media site in the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed the phenomenon that is Netflix’s “Stranger Things.”  Personally I was hesitant to devote any more of my busy schedule to a new show, especially when re-watching “The Office” is so easy. But curiosity got the best of me and last week I started the first episode. It didn’t take long until I was completely hooked. I watched the entire first season in two days. If you’ve seen the show, chances are you know what I’m talking about. But if you haven’t, here are a few reasons I think you should give it a shot.

1.  It’s not that scary.

At first the suspense and creepy music can put you a little on edge, but if you stick with it you’ll get over the initial fear. By the end of the season I wasn’t even fazed by the supernatural aspect, and just totally devoted to the story.

2. The acting is phenomenal.

For a show that places most of the weight on young actors, they really pull through. The characters are well-crafted and relatable, and the actors portray that. You believe the emotions you see, and even experience them yourself.

3. The show is beautiful to watch.

The visuals are engaging and the aesthetics are enchanting. The suburban 80’s setting plays on nostalgic feelings, and remind you that there was a time when you had to ask your science teacher all your theoretical questions because Google wasn’t a thing yet.

4. The characters defy typical television tropes.

Without giving too much away, I’ll just say they will surprise you. There’s redemption, romance, and revelations galore. Everyone has a story that comes out one way or another, and they’re all somehow intertwined.

5. It’s a classic mystery.

For those who enjoy trying to work out the story before it’s confirmed, you’ll be sure to binge watch. The show takes conspiracy theories to a new level. It’s even great to re-watch to catch the little foreshadowing elements you missed the first time.

6. The whole season is right there.

Ah, yes, the beauty of Netflix. You don’t have to wait to watch the next episode! Just wait fifteen seconds and boom. The next episode is playing and you have to finish what you started. The only downside is waiting for the next season after just eight crazy episodes.

So if you have a Netflix subscription, or even if you’re mooching off of your parents, go see for yourself. You may hate it, you may love it, but at least you’ll know what your friends are talking about when they say they love Eleven.
