A UMaine Collegiette’s Guide to Surviving Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

Now that it’s November, the impending doom of winter is upon us.  It may have already snowed- but do not fear Black Bears! Although winter at UMaine is a long one, here is a guide for the UMaine collegiette to survive winter on campus.

1. Bundle up in cute layers.

Just because it’s cold, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fashion! Layer up in scarves, long cardigans, bulky sweaters and cute boots. Add some gloves and a hat to a cute winter coat, and you’re all set to face the frigid weather.

2. Find a winter sport you love.

Finding a sport unique to the winter season helps the long season pass by.  Try out skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or ice skating.  While the ski mountains may not be too close to Orono, you can join the UMaine Ski and Snowboard Club, or buy the student season pass for deals on carpooling and ski passes. Go to the Alfond Arena for public skating, Monday through Friday 2 – 4 p.m., or for stick and puck, Monday through Friday from 12 – 2 p.m.

3. Go to the hockey games.

It is finally hockey season! While waiting in line for hours in below zero weather doesn’t seem fun, it is all worth it to feel the school spirit at the home hockey games.  Just be sure to get in line early enough to get in the student section and enjoy the band along with the classic UMaine chants.

4. Hit the gym.

Just because it’s winter, that doesn’t mean you need to slack off at the gym.  Getting some exercise can boost your mood and help combat winter blues. Join one of the fitness sessions at the Rec Center or attend a drop-in class.

5. Start something new.

Post-Winter Break is the perfect time to start fresh with a new semester and start that new activity that you have been meaning to do.  Whether it is informal rush for a sorority, getting a campus job, starting a club with some friends or playing intramurals, it is your opportunity to start anew. Winter is also a great time to start a new hobby, since a lot of your time is spent indoors.  Start up crafting or read a new book.
