Ryan’s Midweek Beat

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.
This is the sixth installment of a brand new weekly posting right here on Her Campus UMaine! I’m a local Music Producer and DJ in the Orono area looking to share the sounds and culture of EDM with others. Twice a week you can catch me spinning some of the latest and greatest electronic tracks of today, Thursdays at 11pm on UMaine’s very own WMEB 91.9 FM and Fridays at 11pm-4am on Radio207.com. Each week I will be bringing you one of my favorite EDM tracks, varying from electro house, trap, dubstep, trip-hop, and more.

I’ve heard it all, every negative joke and comment you could imagine stemming from this so called Dubstep craze. I’ll be the first to admit that yes it is reckless, outlandish, noisy, and sure the bass drops are filthier than a taxidermists kitchen but, I just love the parts that go wub wub wub. Furthermore, I refuse to think that Dubstep is dead; it’s only evolving. I do agree that classic wub love just isn’t enough anymore though. Club goers are going out to dance, and dancing is exactly what DJ’s hope to accomplish. All this being said, Dubstep music should make you want to do one of the following:

1. Rage (All typical party activities included)
or
2. Jump out of the nearest window.

If you answered number 1, I have the perfect track for you this week. First off, “Her Majesty’s Socialist Request” is a beautifully crafted track by the late great trip-hop genius RJD2, hopefully a name you’ve heard of by this point. His stylings are similar to that of Gramatik, Aesop Rock, or Blockhead for example. Well, Figure, one of today’s most popular dubstep producers, got his filthy, grimy, and nasty little paws all over it and turned it into something that even Mike Rowe would be proud of. Trust me when I say, this week’s track will leave you needing a shower and you begging for more. If things start shaping up like this, I foresee Dubstep making a glorious comeback. Besides, If I have to hear “Levels” one more time, option 2 is going to start looking mighty inviting.

Enjoy.
