Around this time in the school year I find myself looking for a new Netflix show to binge watch and further help me procrastinate all my responsibilities. Rather than watch Friends for the 27th time I found some other binge-worthy shows that everyone seems to be loving!

Comedies

The Good Place: Kristen Bell stars as Eleanor Shellstrop who wakes up in the afterlife known as “the good place”. After realizing she has been sent to this heaven- like utopia for those who have lived a righteous life she must hide the truth of her subpar behavior and become a better person. You are sure to LOVE this show if you want to laugh about your own subpar life.

Santa Clarita Diet: What if one day you transformed into a zombie and started craving human flesh? That’s exactly what happened to Sheila Hammond, a real estate agent that use to live a normal suburban life in Santa Clarita, California. This show has a slight horror-like feel to it and might not be the best pick for those with a weak stomach.

Sitcom Comedies

New Girl: When a bubbly school teacher moves into a loft apartment with three men, there’s no telling what might happen. Jess Day moves to Los Angeles and becomes best friends with her three new roommates that all have their own strange personalities. Her model best friend, Cece, helps her survive in this crazy apartment even when a fourth man moves in. This show is sure to make you laugh and wish you too, could live with this crazy group.

The Office: A desk job might not seem that bad after following the everyday lives of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees. Steve Carell stars as the best boss ever in this hilarious comedy that is bound to make you laugh and understand a whole bunch of new memes.

Parks and Rec: If you liked The Office, you’ll love Parks and Rec, which follows the staff of the Pawnee Indiana Parks and Recreation Department. Leslie Knope is the deputy director that has big dreams to help fill in a construction pit but is slightly to ambitious for Ron Swanson, the parks director, that is totally anti-government. (Ironic, right?)

Friends: If you haven’t seen Friends than you need to step up your game and get with the program! All ten seasons are filled with hilarious and heartwarming adventures of the main six characters, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey and Ross and their crazy lives living in Manhattan. Friends is known for being one of the most re-watchable shows ever.

Romantic Comedies

Jane the Virgin: When a young, religious, Latina, virgin named Jane accidentally becomes artificially inseminated her life becomes pretty interesting. To make the show a little bit more interesting, the biological father of Jane’s baby is a married man that owns the hotel Jane works at, AND was Jane’s teenage crush.

Comedy Dramas

Orange is the New Black: OITNB is not Netflix’s most-watched original series by mistake. When Piper Chapman turns herself in to Litchfield Penitentiary, a women’s minimum security federal prison, she is ill-prepared for what prison has to offer. Filled with many graphic sexual scenes and abuse, this show is not for everyone, but with great character development and multiple plot twist you will find yourself emotionally attached to all these lovely criminals.

Gilmore Girls: Through the lives of a single mother and her daughter this series dives deep into issues with love, family, friends, education, heartbreak and social classes. This heartwarming series starts with the backstory of Lorelai, a teenage mother with a rocky relationship with her parents and then moves to her current lives as a thirty- something year old with a teenager. Now forced to have dinner with her parents every Friday, many difficulties arise.

Medical Dramas

Grey’s Anatomy: Following the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attending physicians developing into seasoned doctors proves to be more interesting than it sounds in this amazing series. The show covers their intertwining personal lives and relationships along with all the drama working in a hospital brings. Once you start this series you won’t be able to stop until you finish all 14 seasons.

Teen Drama

Riverdale: What starts as a seemingly normal show about high school friends, this show takes a dark turn. This show involves love triangles, losing friends, high school drama, and a mysterious death of a football quarterback. What was believed to be an accidental drowning, will bring up many secrets hidden in this once quiet town. With only two seasons so far, you can catch up just in time for the third season.

Freaks and Geeks: Based in 1980-1981, Lindsay and her younger brother Sam attend William McKinley High School where Lindsay’s friends are considered “freaks” and Sam’s are “geeks”. Following the lives of these “freaks and geeks” along with their home life together, explores many different parts of the social universe they are trying to fit into.

Young Adult Fiction

Thirteen Reasons Why: Clay Jensen comes home from high school one day to find a box filled with seven double sided tapes, each one directed to a different person. The tapes are from his classmate and secret crush, Hannah Baker, who recently took her own life and sent out these tapes so everyone can hear her story. This show is based on the novel “13 Reasons Why” written by Jay Asher but includes many twist of its own, along with a new backstory that will play out in the upcoming second season. Make sure to catch up before season two debuts!

Science Fiction

Stranger Things: With the release of season two, Stranger Things instantly got the attention of millions (I personally watched both seasons within 48 hours). In the 1980s a young boy goes missing in the small town of Hawkins Indiana, which leads to a large array of discoveries and supernatural events, including a young girl with psychokinetic abilities that might hold the secrets as to where Will can be found.

Black Mirror: Each episode of Black Mirror is completely separate from the other, each almost acting as an hour long mini-movie. Most episodes take place in near-future setting and focus on consequences of new technology with a dark satirical tone. Although some episodes are much lighter than others some can be extremely dark and involve numerous murders. You never know what you are going to get in each episode, but they will all get you hooked.
