The Moment All Pat’s Fans Have Been Waiting For…

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

If you watched Super Bowl 51, you witnessed one of the most intensely dramatic comebacks in NFL history. The Atlanta Falcons were ahead 28-3 in the third quarter. It appeared the Falcons were going to turn this title game into a blowout. However, Tom Brady proved he really is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) with his jaw-dropping performance. Despite the fact that the New England Patriots were losing by 25 points, Brady led his talented team into what will be known as the greatest comeback in NFL Super Bowl history. The Patriots scored the 25 most-needed points for an unbelievable comeback, tying the game 28-28. The Patriots changed history by overcoming this 25 point deficit. The previous record for the biggest Super Bowl comeback was just 10 points. In past Super Bowl history, no team has ever won the Super Bowl after trailing by more than 10 points. For the first time ever, a Super Bowl went into overtime to break the 28-28 tie. You read that correctly, the previous 50 Super Bowls never had a title game go into overtime. The New England Patriots rallied for a 34-28 overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons!

The New England Patriots defied history, once again, with the GOAT becoming the first quarterback to win five Super Bowl titles. Brady was named Super Bowl MVP for the fourth time, which is the most ever. He also threw a total of 466 yards which is another Super Bowl record. Head Coach Bill Belichick won his fifth Super Bowl ring, the most of any head coach. Brady’s season began with a four-game suspension because of the infamous “Deflategate” scandal. But his season could not have ended any better by adding a fifth Super Bowl ring to his collection.

With red, white, and blue confetti soaring through the air, Brady crouched down on the field for a decent amount of time. Overwhelmed and attempting to gather himself, photographers and reporters swarmed Brady. Star running back LeGarrette Blount came over to comfort Brady until Coach Belichick finally appeared and the dynamic duo hugged one another powerfully. Brady yelled into his coach’s ear. “I love you!” “We did it!” Blount shouted to Brady “You’re the greatest, bro!” “The greatest!”

To tug at your heart strings, Brady’s biggest fan has been fighting an undisclosed form of cancer for 18 months, according to Today. Brady’s mother, Galynn, was forced to miss her son’s entire football season due to her illness. But she was strong and made it to the big game Sunday night in Houston to support her only son. Today reported Patriots owner Robert Kraft stated after the game, “I spoke to him in the locker room before the game, and I said, we’ve got to win this one from your mom. I know how important his mom is, and she’s been going through chemotherapy and radiation, and this is the first game she’s come to. She came here.”

Every Patriots fan’s dream was granted when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handed the Vince Lombardi trophy to Robert Kraft. The most significant moment of the entire night for all true Patriots fans was witnessing Goodell aggressively booed off the staged. Goodell was single- handedly responsible for suspending Brady’s first four games of the 2016 season with regards to the “Deflategate” scandal. While Goodell spoke on stage and the crowd erupted with booing, Brady and Belichick enjoyed a long anticipated laugh.
