The relationship between regular physical activity and breast cancer incidence has been extensively researched, with the majority of studies indicating that physically active women have a lower risk of developing breast cancer than inactive women. Experts are suggesting that exercise is one of the best methods for preventing breast cancer.

Experts have proposed several explanations for the relationship between physical activity and breast cancer prevention and believe that the link is hormones. Regular physical activity lowers levels of estrogen, testosterone, insulin, and growth factors, all of which researchers believe may either cause breast cancer or induce tumors to grow faster and larger.

Regular exercise also helps people lose and maintain weight and weight control is a huge factor for preventing breast cancer. Studies have shown that women within their normal weight range (generally a BMI under 25) have more positive effects of physical activity in preventing breast cancer.

Experts suggest that everyone should get 30 – 60 minutes of moderate to high – intensity physical activity at least five days a week. For a moderate – internsity workout, grab your friends and go for a brisk walk on the trails on campus. For those looking for a more high – intensity workout, swim laps in the pool at the Rec. Center.

Those who are already active can benefit even more by increasing the frequency of their physical activity and/or upping the intensity. For those who are not very physically active, remember that the small things matter – take the stairs rather than the elevator, walk or bike to campus, walk down the hallway to talk to your roommates rather than texting or calling (You know you’re guilty of it).

So the next time you’re feeling that you are just too lazy or tired to make it to the Rec. Center, remember that not only will you feel more confident about your outer appearance, but will also reap the potential life-saving benefits inside your body.

Celebrate survivorship, honor those who lost their battle, and raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer by participating in one of Susan G. Komen’s races!  These races give you the opportunity to make an enormous difference in so many lives all while exercising.
