I Tried 5 Different Mascaras so you Don’t Have to

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

Finding the perfect mascara can be a difficult task. I always think I find a great mascara, and then I find one that I end up liking even more. Although everyone has their own opinions of mascara, personally, I like long  feathery-looking  lashes. I hate clumps, flaky or runny mascara, and hard-looking lashes. I have pretty naturally long eyelashes but adding mascara to my makeup look is the icing on the cake. I will be rating 5 different mascaras on what I think looks and feels best on me. I will be wearing the mascara all day, and I will not be using an eyelash curler. Here is what I found.

Lancome Monsieur Big – $26.00 from Ulta

8.5/10

This has been my regular mascara for the past few months. I really like the wand on this mascara. It gives good length to my lashes and gives me a pretty feathery look, but it can clump. At the end of the day, there’s usually some smudging below my eye. Overall I really like this mascara. The application is easy because of the wand. This has been one of my favorites, but not the perfect one for me because it clumps a little bit. I think this mascara would be great for you if you want an easy application and long lashes.

Glossier Lash Slick – $16.00 from Glossier

7.5/10

I bought this mascara expecting a different result than I got. This mascara gives a really natural look. It is lengthening, and it doesn’t smudge or flake, but by the end of the day, you can barely tell you’re wearing mascara. Some days I like this natural look, but I usually won’t wear mascara if I want the natural vibe. If you like wearing mascara but not a dramatic look, then this is the mascara for you.

Benefit They’re Real – $26.00 from Ulta

10/10

There has always been a lot of hype around this mascara, but I had never given in until now. I’m so happy that I bought this mascara. It definitely lives up to the hype, in my opinion. It was effortless  to apply because the brush was terrific, and it did not clump at all. It made my lashes look super long. I wore it for most of the day and there was no running or smudging. This is going to be my new go-to mascara.

Nars Climax Extreme – $24.00 from Ulta

9.5/10

I loved this mascara. I especially liked it because of the packaging. It gave me great length and the feathery look that I want. The only reason that this mascara isn’t getting a 10/10 for me is that the brush is a little bigger than I like, so it got on my eyelids a little. I think it gives a comparable look to the Benefit one. Overall, I would definitely recommend this mascara.

Urban Decay Lash Freak – $25.00 from Ulta

3/10

I was skeptical about trying this mascara because of the wand. The wand only has brushes on one side, and that’s not something I usually like. When I first put it on, it was very liquidy. It took a long time to dry so it got on my eyelids, and it clumped. I had to work to get them to unclump, which is never a good sign. After probably 5 minutes or so of letting it dry and fixing them, my lashes looked okay, but they clumped throughout the day. They lasted fine, but they did smudge a bit. It wasn’t the best experience, and I just got a mediocre outcome. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this mascara.
