Holiday Activities for When You’re Stuck Inside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Maine chapter.

There is nothing quite like the first snow of the season to officially usher in Christmas cheer, cold weather and the beginning of fun winter activities. When the snow is falling and the temperatures make Orono feel like an arctic tundra, it’s hard to find the motivation to go out. Here are some fun things to do in the comfort of your own (warm) living room!

Make Christmas cookies

I remember being little and helping my mom with making cookies every step of the way – from cutting out little gingerbread men (or moose – living in Northern Maine influences your traditions in many ways) to Czech jelly-filled cookie sandwiches – there were always plenty of sweets floating around our house, especially during Christmastime. It’s always a good time to get friends together to bake and decorate cookies. There’s tons of recipes on Pinterest to make some really creative ones!

Watch movies and drink hot chocolate

The ultimate time to Netflix is burritoed in a pile of fuzzy blankets with hot chocolate (and the cookies you baked) by your side. There’s tons of Christmas movies to choose from online between Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime videos. And if you’re feeling sappy, Hallmark never fails to disappoint with a cheesy rom-com or two.

Decorate for the holidays!

Regardless of what religion you practice, there are never enough decorations that can be put up around the holidays. With Hanukkah and Christmas coming up, there are many ways you can decorate for the holidays. Many of my Jewish friends have intricate menorahs that they put out each year for the eight day celebration, and many of my Christian friends celebrate the season by hanging up beautiful ornaments and lights from their tree. No matter what you do, it’s always fun to make your world a little more festive. The first snow brings so much excitement into the air. These are just some of the ideas of things that you can do before the holidays!
