Thoughts of spring continually snap through my mind as the snow starts to turn the grass muddy. As those thoughts wander through my brain, I also find myself shopping, where every website is now releasing their spring collections. This means it’s time for spring fashion; a time of revival, a time for new emerging trends. These new trends can be overwhelming, but it’s also a good excuse to add new pieces to your wardrobe.

We start to see what trends are likely going to pop up after fashion month. The shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris model what all of the biggest designers are putting together for the upcoming season. After these shows, we land at major trends that we’re sure to see go from the runway to everyday wear.

One of the major trends shown on the runway was beachwear. Once the weather starts to warm up, we will likely see beachy items made casual. Off the runway, we will also likely see the height of the not-so-academic uniform such as blazers, skirts, and school-uniform-esque pieces.

Leading into that, the past few months have been all about “that girl” fashion. Romanticizing a capsule wardrobe where you have pieces you can wear with anything and you’ll look polished. A combination of a 90s/early 2000s effortless classic look. The basics seem much more put together with a blazer or coat layered over the top. The “it girl” trend can really be anything you want it to be. Use your basics, and then add your own fun element.

Matching sets and layering are here to stay, but we are also likely to see a bigger presence of draping. Draped fabrics were seen on a lot of the catwalks during fashion week, which is a great element of texture to add to an outfit. Another trend that’s sticking around is athletic wear. The casualness of sweatpants, but a matching top makes it look a little more put together. I’m hoping this trend stays around for a long time. The colors we’re going to see a lot of are royal/pool blues, orange, and more pinks and greens.

The most important thing to do when looking for trendy pieces is to shop your own closet first! Ask yourself what you already have hanging in the back of your closet before you go buy clothes that you’ll only wear for a few months. Another great way to get trendy pieces is to thrift them. Doing these two things first will help reduce the environmental impact of fashion. Trends are a great way to add personality to your look, but trends can go away really quickly – so, my advice is to invest in the basics and then find your own personal style to add on top from there.
