This week kicks off Her Campus UMaine’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week.  In of October being breast cancer awareness month and Her Campus UMaine sponsoring a Breast Cancer Fundraiser at Curva this Saturday, October 22nd, 2011, we will be posting articles all week regarding breast cancer, early dedication, how to deal when a family member or friend is affected and how YOU can help in the fight for the cure!

To start off I thought I would give you some basic statistics on breast cancer from cancer.org:
The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2011:

  • The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman’s life is a little less than 1 in 8 (12%).
  • About 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
  • About 57,650 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).
  • About 39,520 women will die from breast cancer

With statists like these it puts no one in a safe category from being affected by breast cancer. That is why you need to start the conversation today with your doctor on what you can do to prevent and manage your breast health. Early detection is the BEST protection.

Breast cancer is a problem that has been around for a while and will not go away until enough people have come together to fight for a cure. I know that breast cancer has affected many people with either a family member or close friend that has bravely fought against it. An easy way to you can do your part in the fight is to check yourself and remind your female friends to do the same.

Keep coming back and see what new articles and information HerCampus UMaine will have for you this week as a kick off to the Breast Cancer Fundraiser at Curva this Saturday
